Anybody here have any experience w/ Ford SD 6.0 PSD?

I would like to know also. My 2006 F-250 with 6.0 has the auto tranny and 3.73 rear axle and in the summer I get 14mpg with the cetane booster from Ford. Without it I get 12-13 so it is worth it but I would prefer a boost up to 18 or more for my driving which is mostly town to town drives (5-8 mile trips). Pulling trailers I don't worry too much about mileage as it is part of the game.

Sheesh. With my early '99 F-250 7.3 crew cab 2WD short bed with 3.73 and auto, I get 17 mpg just driving around, I've gotten as much as 20 mpg on an unloaded freeway trip, and I still get 13-14 pulling a fully loaded 4-horse GN trailer. I do have a few mods, including a hard tonneau cover, DP Tuner chip, intake and exhaust, and fuel system.

Is your truck a 4x4? I feel that 4x4 really hurts your mileage, in addition to reducing your towing capacity. But of course, when you need it, you really need it.

4x4 does hurt your mileage. It weighs more and it increases drag.

Man what I would have given to get 15MPG, not to mention 17MPG in any of my Fords or my GMC.

I drive with a very light foot and never let my trucks idle except to cool off a minute or 2 before shut down.

Just read in another forum (heavyequipmentforum) that the most problems with the 6.0 come from people who baby the engines, that would include me. If you run them hard, which I was advised to do, it will clean them out and keep things running better, by running hard they mean hauling heavy loads, accelerate hard, etc. I think its a pain to add a cocktail to the fuel just to keep the EGR from coking up and engine running cleaner.

Yes it is 4wd. Between construction and farming I can't own a truck without 4wd unless it is a dedicated road vehicle in which our winters make 2wd trucks a hassle without a ton of weight in the back.

I was always told to run this 6.0 like you would a gas motor. Not so much flooring it every time you take off but to start it up and go. Don't let it sit running idle very long as that is what caused most of the problems. However, I have noticed since Ford reflashed mine if you let it sit idle for about 30 seconds or so it jumps up to a fast idle which I am to assume is to burn the fuel more efficient while it is idle.

I've had the exact opposite experience. i'm so turned off by Gm vehicles that I'll never buy one for a LOOOOONG time. We use gm and ford at work.. every gm vehicle I've had was junk.. I even bought a yukon that was almost new but was being sold byt he co at a huge discount as an executaive was leaving... good thing it had extended warranty... it lived in the shop more than my house some years.

I now have an 04 crew cab f250 6.0 psd.. great truck.. never a moments trouble. Some people complain that it's loud.. and it is louder than the gmc 2500's at work.. but I'll take loud over unreliable any day. one of the 2500's been in the injector dr's office twice in the last 2 years for pump and injector issues... and we ALL get our bulk fuel from the same tank..

I'd also consider a dodge diesel if i ever get another one.

I know this post has moved down a few pages but.....

I attempted to test drive a couple of 6.0 PSD trucks and here's what happened....BTW I'm looking to trade in my '03 F350 7.3L Ext. Cab 4x4 DRW with 177,000 miles.

Victim #1 2004 F250 (6.0) Crew Cab Lariat 102,000 miles. VERY clean truck, however had a tear in the leather drivers seat. Would not start when I got there (about an hour drive). They called a week later and stated that they replaced the high-pressure oil pump, a couple of injectors, egr and reflashed the computer. They wanted $19,900.

Victim #2 Same exact truck even the same color (BTW happens to match what I already have). 69,000 miles and also SPOTLESS!. Has bedcover and power rear sliding window, otherwise loaded. Drove down the street and noticed a very loud fluttering sound (wastegate?) after letting off the accelerator (even after slight acceleration). When attempting to get onto the interstate I lost complete power, almost got rear ended by a Freightliner while trying to merge in. Pulled over and after cycling the ignition it started. I was barely able to get back out into traffic again when she quit. Coasted to a stop at on the berm and it was no go. The state patrol showed up and sat with me until the hook showed. Meanwhile my mother stopped to pick up my little boy who was with me. They wanted $18,900.

My old 7.3L runs great but I need more room and the truck needs upper and lower balljoints and front axle seals/bearings. I also need 6 new tires.

I believe I'll be looking at a few GM's. I'm so aggravated at this crap! My wifes Suburban has been the best vehicle I have ever owned.

Robert- a tech told me the same thing and I have treated it like a gasser but these cold mornings the Torq-Shift seems to shift hard.

I know, on the real cold days I do give it a tad more time to warm up before I take off but I don't let it sit too long.

Never new this was the case but both of my 6.0's have been great. My lady has a heavy foot in the F-250 and I run the heck out of mine a few times a week when I pull up to the light and there is a Dmax or Cumminis sitting there, or even a Mustang or Camero. Guess this is why I have had good luck.

I just have a tough time wrapping my brain around this: someone has a 500+ HP 6L that races other cars & trucks at stoplights and frequently tows a 15,600lb trailer getting 4-5 more MPG than a stock, gently driven 6L.
