If you look closely at the picture you can see that there is a guidance system in place on top of the railroad car along with a cable to help pull the tractor up. The bucket is locked into a brace or bracket that keeps the tractor from tilting or tipping.

I've seen the back hoes on top of railroad cars around here unloading dirt, riprap ect. Pretty ingenious idea.

Don't you have to wonder if it wouldn't be simpler to take advantage of the self unloading doors on the bottom of the car? It seems a ramp of some sort would let the dirt or whatever be directed to the side of the tracks after the doors were opened.

BTW, I never saw this set of pics before, so kind of enjoyed them. Thanks.

In his younger days a friend of mine ran a hoe for the railroad. It was common for him to work from atop a car. He didn't have track systems or cables to get him on top. Just good operator skills. He said getting on top wasn't an issue. Staying on top while swinging the bucket full of material was another matter.

I still think that's got to take a pretty skilled operator with some faith in himself/herself and courage.

Some things like compacted cargo or frozen cargo can defy gravity hence the need to paw some loose. And in the last pic they want the fill beside the tracks not between them, as you noted, and it probably wouldn't slide on a ramp shallow enough to clear the rails. MikeD74T
