I fix cars and all of the old Toyota parts boxes have that logo on them.

Yep it's a Toyota. The letters are TEQ...

I have a Landcruiser and believe it or not, a lot of Landcruiser guys collect anything TEQ related. It goes way back to when Toyota made super dependable vehicles.

Are you going to replace the belt, or having it done? It would be a real pity to replace an entire engine for a timing belt. If you can spin the engine, you should be able to do a compression check (leak down test is better) and see if you have anything bent and leaking.

You're looking at what, 4 hours and a $40.00 belt? You can probably find the procedure on the web if you know the class and size of the engine, because you're obviously going to have to retime it.

Diesel fan here, gimme a diesel over a gasser anytime, and yes, that is a 97 Dodge Cummins under my behind!

Good luck and let us know.

George

I will investigate and evaluate the damage myself first. It surely would be real pity to replace the entire if it were indeed *just* a broken timing belt. However, I don't see too many cases out there where no major engine damage is done while running an interference engine at full speed and having a timing belt break. If someone knows if the 2L series engine (although I'm not positive this is a 2L) is an interference engine or not that would help. The engine clearly has the numbers 325 cast into the block and head but I do not see any diesel engines going by 325 from Toyota. Otherwise, I need to purchase a new belt ($50 looks like), put it on making sure of timing, etc. and then check compression and see. Or start the process of taking the head off and see what I find along the way. I may only need to get under the valve cover to confirm destruction depending on what happened. I will post what I find and hopefully get some pics if needed.

That sounds like a good plan! No doubt we need pics, we are a curious bunch!

The Volvo red block, in the 240 series is listed as an interference engine, it, in fact, is not, so don't give up hope if someone says it is one. It wouldn't be the first time someone, including the manufacturer, is wrong!

Good luck on fifty bucks and dirty fingers being the cure.

The early Toyota diesels are some of the easiest things to work on. Toyota has a philosophy early on that everything was made to be rebuildable and not replaceable. If something is broke, it can be replaced.

Plenty of sites out there that can be of use to you.

I'll take that gear-timed diesel now.

Heartbreaking!!

Well, that settles the question as to if it was an interference engine. Head job, or at least we valves and guides, rocker arm, and probably a piston or two, or three!! Now you may be in the neighborhood of a new or rebuilt motor. Call Jasper?

Very sorry to see the results.

I appreciate the condolences. Amazing how I only put 1 hour of run time on that engine before it choked. I wish I could get that lucky in selling something so close to failure! :duh:

20+ yrs. ago a friend of mine had a little Toyota pick-up with a diesel. The manual said to replace the timing belt @ 100,000 miles. He a 100,050 miles on it and decided to go to work and replace it when he returned home a week later. The truck never made to work, the belt broke @100,100 miles. It ended up breaking most of the rocker arm stools off the head. Cost was over $2000 for a new head, belt and gaskets.

Well after thinking the situation over some I decided to see what damage was done to the pistons and if they were ok I would attempt a repair which they appeared to be once I got the head off. I figured what the heck it's already broken. Also the spare engine I found needs a new pump so that's stalling a swap. So I found out the engine is a 2188cc 'L' series engine by measuring the bore and stroke. I found a belt for $21 but that was the only part available. That means fixing the broken rockers and reusing the head gasket (eeeewwww). Again it's already broken and for $21 plus $10 for a new injector pump seal I knew it also needed I'll take my chances. So armed with some Nickel-Arc welding rod I set out to put the rockers together. The head is back on after guessing the head bolt torque to be 95 ft*lbs I'm awaiting the seal and belt. I took the injector pump apart because I thought that was the original problem right after the belt snapped. It is back together but my garage is no injection shop so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'll update as I make progress. Wish me luck!
