Anybody taken off their ROPS?

Here is my take on ROPS and seatbelts. Yes, there is no doubt at all that they save lives and serious injury. But let's not forget the REAL reason for the ROPS... To keep lawyers off the manufacturer's backs!!!!!

About a month ago, I took the tractor out, while letting it warm up I unfolded the rops & used the tractor. When I finished I started to drive in to the garage & found myself doing a wheelie. I had to unfold it initially because it won't fit in the garage up & you know, it still won't. I backed up, got off, looked up at the header, stronger than I thought (pole barn garage, rough sawn, marks barely visible), I immediatly looked up at the house, she's not coming out. She must not have been looking. The one thing worse than doing something dumb is, doing something dumb while your better half is watching. She still doesn't know, let's keep it that way.

We were dispatched to a call couple of days ago where a guy was pulling a small shed on skids with his 9N Ford.

Unfortunately, he had wrapped the chain around the rear axle of the tractor. The shed hit a stump while being dragged and the tractor flipped backwards. Killed him too. Medical Examiner determined he died of asphyxiation. No broken bones or internal injuries. Steering wheel on his chest and he couldn't breathe. His 17 year old son had to stand there and watch his dad die.

If you're gonna take off the ROPS, think about it.

And, as we all know, tow from the lowest point on your tractor. Even though his tractor never had a ROPS, I can't help but think if he had some type of implement on the 3ph (like a BB or brushhog) it probably would have stopped the tractor from from going over all the way.

Just a friendly reminder men...... he was only 39 years old.

How many of us have driven with the ROPs folded while mowing our yards? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I do........all level ground. But I think, even when folded, it still is above my head.

But I sure didn't put any holes in it........yet /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Another thing: if you're gonna tow something on skids, go in low gear so if something DOES ahppen, you have a little time to react.
