Just curious,....What will a 17 cal. do for you that a Ruger 10/22 won't do?
Anybody use 17 caliber???

Although I think the .22 Hornet would be a great round for your use, your choices will be a little more limited (assuming you're looking for a new gun.) Don't get me wrong, there are "big name" mfgs. currently making guns in that chambering - it is just you will find fewer "flavors" to choose from.). Springfield Armory & Savage with their O/U .22 Hornet/.410 single shots, Ruger has a bolt action, and Taurus even makes a pistol in .22 Hornet, but to my knowledge, Remington and Winchester aren’t currently offering anything in .22H (I could be wrong here of course - you could check with your local gun shop to see what they say.)
As Egon pointed out, you could also consider the .222 Remington - the (for a 55 gr bullet, it is about 3000 fps vs. the 2400 fps for the Hornet or 3400 for the .223). A nice cartridge that won lots of benchrest competitions and has a fine reputation as a varmint cartridge as well. A bit more “oomph” than the Hornet, but something to consider.
There are a lot of wildcat cartridges out there (and more obscure "factory" chamberings as well) - but I suspect that you aren't necessarily going for something hard to find or that has expensive ammo. (You can get new mfg, non reloadable .223 HP ammo (20) for under $3 a box while the .22 Hornet should run you somewhere in the $10 for 20 shots). All depends on how much you want to spend and if you want it carried at every store you go in to or not. /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif
Sounds like you'd like something relatively light so your wife can handle it. Just remember though that for each lb. you shed on the gun, it'll revisit you in the form of recoil velocity and energy, so you gotta strike a balance somewhere. (I ran a calculation on the .17 Rem and it has a really low recoil V & E - roughly half of something like the .223, which is still really low.)
BTW, I added a pic of one of my better groups with my 6mm ppc just for fun since we're talking about gun stuff. Not my best group with it (you can see the shot I pulled on the lower left). Just gotta keep trying I suppose! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Lost all interest in shooting in 85 [ couldn't figure out why ] and have not shot a gun since except for a pellet gun for attic squirells.

RanchMan, I had to make one correction, the .17 HMR shoots a 17 grain bullet at 2550. While I wouldn't shoot a coyote unless I had a very good shot under 100 yards, it has quite a bit of omph. Attached is a picture of a quarter shot at 100 yards with a .17 HMR.
Boondox, I would recomend either the .22 hornet or the .223.
The hornet is quieter with less recoil, but .223 ammo can be had dirt cheap. Walmart (and other stores) sells 40 round boxes for $14.00.

I'm still trying to work out a "pet" load for my 6 ppc. (I just wish brass was cheaper. /w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif) So far I've been staying within the Hodgdon family of powders for it. 'Course that's the thing with reloading: Infinite variables to play with! /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif
Too bad you lost interest a few years back. I will say that a good pellet gun can be a lot of fun though. I used to shoot Feinwerkbau's in school years ago, but I have a Gamo I shoot on occasion now. Pretty accurate for not a lot of cash. Maybe some day you'll decide to pick up the hobby again, if not, I hope you have continued luck on those attic squirrels! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Thanks for pointing out my goof! /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif I've gone back and re-run the ballistic tables for .17 HMR based on a 17 gr. bullet instead of a 25 gr. one. (I put the revised info back in my first post so it would be correct now - I'd hate to put bad info out there!!!) Since I didn't have the ballistic coefficient, I calculated it based on the data I found on <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.dto.com/shooting/article.jsp?articleid=701>this page</A> so I could calculate velocity/energy out to 1000 yards.
I have to admit, I've been interested in a .17 rimfire since Shooting Times had an article on a wildcat one back in the late '80s/early '90s (not sure what year that magazine was put out.) I still think it is way underpowered for 'ol Wile E., but as Splitfire pointed out, I think the "fun" factor would be way up there due to the accuracy they apparently have (and which your quarter helps to prove. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif)

As I understand it, the principle difference is the centerfire has the firing pin hit the primer in the center to fire, whereas the rimfire is struck near the edge for it to fire.
if my understanding of that much is accurate, my thinking is "so whats the big deal".
Now, after this post, I am beginning to infer that you can have the SAME round in either format and now there might be preferences for one format over the other.
Other than any mechanical difference of the firing pin striking the load dead center, via off center, is there any substantial differences with the SAME bullet having different firing methods? If so, what (in general) IS that difference?
Accuracy/velocity/other?? (or am I reading too much into it)
