Anyone built a cheap metal carport?

A friend scored a free 10x20 canvas garage, and wanted it tall enough to cover a motorhome. I scrounged up some galvanized 1.625" fence posts and extended the legs to 9 feet.
You might be able to score one of these cheap or free, if the canvas is damaged. Extend the legs, tek-screw some furring strips for metal roof and siding and have a custom sized garage for a fraction of the tailor-mades.

If I was going to build, I'd do a simple pole shed with 4x4s on 6-8' centers, then roof from there. But with the price of lumber and roof metal these days, I'm not sure there'd be any cost advantage.

We are required to have 600mm square footing by 600mm deep for each post (roughly a 2' cube), you could put a stirrup into this to get the extra height.

2 buddies built these- one tried sinking railroad ties into the ground and it lifted in a wind storm and was destroyed. The other paid the extra for taller sides.

If you want taller sides either pour some concrete posts that come out of the ground or use wood posts that come out of the ground and set the shed on that. But honestly I don’t know if the materials to build it yourself would total $1000....plus the height would be to your liking

You can buy carports that include delivery and installation for less than you pay for kits at big box stores. I suggest looking at those. The catch to the advertised price is changes or add ons (such as taller legs and earth anchors) are super expensive. The popular promo is 20x20 which is perfect for your need. When you choose one, take measurments from a model then do the prep before having it delivered and installed. 8"x16"x2" concrete blocks on ground topped with 8x8x16 concrete blocks topped with treated 2x boards. Mobile home anchors are overkill but not that much more expensive than backyard playset anchor kits which are more than ample. To convince yourself how well they work, screw a small earth anchor in and try pulling it out with your 7100. Furnish 5/16ths lag bolts for going through rail into board.

Are you sure the peak won't clear as it comes? My 12x20 has 7 foot walls but the peak is over 9 feet.
Yea, the peak is only 8 feet - the specifications detail that. Maybe because it is only 10 feet wide.......

These are 2"x2" poles. What is a stirrup in American terms?

You can build hoop buildings out of chain link fence top rail for a lot less than a car port. But you would probably need to put up a 24' wide one - it would give you lots of storage to the sides of the RV

A solid post that is in the footing with a receptacle at the top to accept a post, they come in a variety of lengths with different receptacles on the top, can also come with a flat base so they can be fixed to the footing rather than embedded during the pour.

Part of the confusion is the OP converted 600mm (60cm) to 2” or 2 inches. In reality, 600mm is real close to 2’ or 2 feet- just a little under.
