Anyone else favor older tractors to newer ones?

Definitely a fan of the older stuff for the fact of just pure mechanical equipment. Electronics/engineering is my professional life but I don't enjoy repairing that stuff on my days off. Plus I wanted a tractor that will last decades not years. I spent a long time searching for a mechanically injected simplistic machine. Basic clutch non synchro trans . Only thing electronic is the starter and headlights.

Even for trucks, 12V 6bt for life.

Typically a mechanical breakage is either broken or not where an electronics love to be intermittent

I was just told by some young guy in Bell, Solutions Something Department that my 2 year old I-Phone has reached "End Of Life"!

He'd go into shock with my flip phone that I'm still using. Even my wife is trying to get me to upgrade.

If I could get a brand new Massey 265 today like was made in 80's Id buy it over a new whatever with emissions.

I like them, too. But that 265 was a very expensive tractor back in 1983 - and not even 4WD.

Not all of my phones are rotary dial now, I've got a couple of the newer touch tone ones. Yes, I prefer older tractors!

I just spent the better part of a month going to every dealer in my area and testing tractors. I knew what i wanted before i went but finding it was the hard part. In 2 years i have owned 2 brand new tractors. and in two years i have got to know my dealer very well because of service issues. I own a 2011 new holland t1510 and it's been in the shop twice. once to put a loader on it and once to dish the tires out. Those new ones had around a total of 12 trips into the shop for warranty work and defects. I just found and purchased what i was looking for. a 1997 3930 4wd with less than 1100 hrs garage kept with loader and canopy. still haven't got it to the farm yet. But i bought it for a lot less than my newest tractor i just got rid of. and can almost guarantee they will not have to plug a computer into it just to see what it says is wrong with it........I had the choice of new vs old and i already tried new and we know how that turned out......SO I WENT OLD....

Bet that Ford 3930 will amaze with it's ability to pull a disc or other ground engaging implement and loaf along at around 1400-1600 rpm
all day long.

It has the weight - 5400lb BEFORE mounting an FEL and Low RPM torque to do work that the average new (Equivalent/ advanced) small displacement computer controlled Hydrostat tractor needs cranked up to 2600 rpm to keep moving while actually using more fuel and listening to the Hydro whine. Lots to like about a MFWD 3930

Well Done:thumbsup:

My 4 year old 3301 uses 2 quarts of fuel per operating hour... the same as my 1984 L275 did. While I agree about the hydro whine I very rarely operate at over 2000 RPM's; the only exception is when it does need to burn off and the engine isn't up to temperature yet. You can still get a geared tractor, which is what I would have if I had purchased new.

I have decided that I am through buying tractors any newer than Tier III emission standards. Too many stories from owners with later models and emission controls.

I feel the same way but never say never... could be a deal too good to pass on.

My brother has a L3800 and has been approached to sell regularly... he says they have never models but the folks are not interested...
