Mark, good luck if you go on the GE interview. We need a TBN eyes and ears on the inside of the light bulb making.

Good grief, we used to buy mercury at the corner drug store. A blob of it in your hands is fascinating, we took it to school for show & tell, rubbed copper penny's with it until the penny turned silver, passed it around in class. So for those worried about the amount of mercury contained in a cfl bulb, I say it ain't gonna hurt you even if you ingested it. It's funny, we freak at a miniscule amount of mercury, but eat GMO grains every day....kinda lopsided reasoning if you ask me......soap box [off]

Pretty bad advice. Have any facts to back that up?

Yep, I'm 56 and still kicking.........

Our (1965) HS Chemistry teacher passed the mercury around for us to play with. We coated our class rings and coins. I'm 64 and still kicking.

I'm not saying mercury is good for you or anything like that, but perspective is important. Anyone worried about being mandated to bring a CFL bulb into their home ought to be out closing down coal-fired electric plants. You cannot choose to not breathe, and they are supplying a lot more mercury than broken CFL bulbs. Where is the outrage?

Many years ago I was working on construction of new salt water electrolysis. The anode of each electrolyzer was made of about 70cuft of mercury. We used to eat in factory cafeteria that also allowed to retired former employees to get food there. There were people with terrible shake that they were dropping food on floor. All of them were former operators of the old electrolysis and got exposed to mercury vapor.
Before the high power semiconductors diodes were developed current rectifiers were made from mercury vapor high discharge lamps made my employer. The shop where they were filled was originally isolated from other manufacturing but one of the newly appointed managers moved it to another hall and many people got exposed to mercury vapor and quite few died of mercury poisoning.
Mercury is definitely dangerous but question is at what exposure. I personally wouldn't take any chances.
Google Minamata disease.

We have many can lights in the house. Once I bought CFL R30 for our kitchen but they were horrible. Replaced them with LED and so far they are great. Good light color, enough lumens and they dim perfectly uniformly. I will replace all incandescent with LEDs in the rest of the house over time.

Mine were all the PAR type, and checking, they were actually Sylvania not Phillips. I remembered incorrectly. They still suck, frankly. None have come close to the warranty lifteime, and most fail in a short fraction of the warranty period.

You're not getting it.

You're not getting it.

I guess that makes two of us. Oh well, it was a good, honest discussion with varying points of view. Nothing wrong with that.

The inefficiencies of the incandescent bulbs are good sometimes.

In our house the heating system doesn't adequately reach the master bedroom & bath. On cold winter evenings, we turn on the lights a little while before we head to bed and the previously cool rooms become comfortable. There are 15, 60 watt bulbs and 2 100's heating those rooms, 1100 watts total, instead of turning up the heat for the entire house. In the summer we can change out those bulbs for more efficient ones or unscrew a few.
