Anyone ever used a miniature excavator?

My apologies!! I failed to mention in my post that the rated digging depths tend to be exaggerated. One way to dig deeper is to bench down. ie Dig down an area large enough to position your machine in and finish digging from there. It's an added pain but if you really have to dig deeper than the hoe will reach, it's an option. Same applies whether using BH or excavator.
Sorry, Too little, too late.

What's wrong with some people? If you told them you needed to dig a hole 8' deep you would think they would be smart enough to rent you a machine capable of doing that. I would take it back and demand a free rental of a larger machine. You should not have to pay twice to get an 8' hole. Sheesh!

Exactly!!!! I told them 8 feet, not 7, not 6.7, or 7.7! I know they have other excavators that could do the job, and they are mini-excavators too.

The rental company gave me full credit and I will be renting a mini excavator that has a 16' reach. So, I will be taking pictures tomorrow. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Picture of the L5030, the 5x5x8 foot hole, and my brother and brother-in-law backfilling the hole. We had to do one part gently. Water table was down around 7 feet. The hole kept caving in, so the box sites about 18" above grade. No big deal, plenty of dirt leftover to put around the base.

It is the foundation for a 89' self supporting crank up tower. I thought I would need 8 cubic yards of concrete, I ended up needing 10! The sand below was soft, and compressed when all the concrete hit it.
