Fly into Portland, skip Seattle. Too much traffic. All the trip ideas are good. Done them all. Crater Lake if you come down this way. Dean Creek Elk Viewing area near the Coast from Sutherlin to Florence. Redwoods if you go near the California border on the Coast. If you go to Bend see the High Desert Museum.

WOW, you guys are lucky to live in such a place. Cornfeilds are kinda boring....except when the combine hopper is overflowing:thumbsup: I'm not into dessert much. But, would love to see big redwoods someday.

Surprised that no one has mentioned the Evergreen Aviation Museum, home of the Spruce Goose located in McMinnville, just SW of Portland and on the way to the coast where the Tillamook Air Museum houses an impressive collection in the world's largest wooden structure. Not sure if one day would be enough for both of these, especially if you have a love for round engines.
Portland prides itself on being weird, as outlined on the television show Portlandia, and having the highest number of strip clubs per-capita of any city. Despite that, Powell's books is well worth a visit, as previously mentioned. Also, there are a lot of interesting food carts that have received national acclaim. Don't know if anyone mentioned it, but there is another museum in Portland, OMSI. They have a retired navy submarine for tours as well as a lot of hands on science stuff. Good for kids.

Also not mentioned is that Portland has a large number of microbreweries.

Another Oregonian here, I would defiantly take a trip down to the Tillamook cheese factory, I always enjoy going there. I also would recommend checking out the beach at Seaside, if the weather is decent (not raining) it can be a pretty neat place, tons of shops right off the beach. A trip to Mt Hood or Mt St. Helens is also a great time, I personally enjoyed Mt. St. Helens better. In Hillsboro, there are a few good places to stop and eat. Check out the Helvetia tavern, its off Hyw. 26 about 3 miles and they make some fine burgers. :thumbsup: I know there are a LOT more fun things to do here too, that's just all I can think of at the moment. :ashamed::laughing:

I had a great time there, they have the worlds only Caterpillar museum which was my favorite part, they even had Oregon's first D8 cat in there. Also a LOT of old tractors, trucks, engines, and old farm equipment, a lot of it is like stepping back in time. :thumbsup: If I remember right it was less than an hour drive from Portland.

Portland now has more breweries than any city in the world, and craft brewing has spread across the entire Pacific Northwest.
There are hundreds of family-friendly brewpubs with GREAT beer (all styles) and good food, even in small towns. If the place doesn't brew its own, you can get local stuff on tap (as well as in bottles and cans in the grocery stores).

Gotta go and finish bottling a batch of my own!
