thanks again everyone

I may have to drive about 2 hours to get one done and the only family member available to drive me home (if needed) would be my 84 year old father.

I do not want him driving 2 hours in winter weather.

So...looks like I am good to go on my own

Thanks again

NRI on knee is no problem...just had one a few weeks ago.

Had torn meniscus...repaired yesterday...arthroscopic surgery. Not too bad...just a couple of Vicodin so far :) Mostly walking around the house and napping today...out and about a bit tomorrow.

Good Luck...Tom R

As stated, no big deal (until you get the bill)! Painful, no, unless they use a brace to hold it in place. For a knee, this is unlikely, but for neck & shoulder MRI's, braces are sometimes used. I've had several scans, including knee, shoulder & neck (open MRI), PET scan, CAT scans, Bone scans, etc.

Not sure how anybody could go to sleep during an MRI though, very noisy! :( ~~ grnspot110

If you can have it looked at by a sports medicine doctor. They deal with these types of injuries all the time. When I tore the MCL in my left knee I had the x-ray done at quick care (to make sure there was no bone damage) and scheduled an appointment for the sport medicine clinic that handles the local college football team. The doctor I saw has probably seen thousands of injured knees. He did a quick inspection of how the knee would or wouldn't move. Then he told me exactly what was wrong with it (minor tear) and what I needed to do. No MRI required for me. While watching local football games I have seen him do exactly the same procedure on injured players on the sidelines.

When I tore the MCL in my right knee several months later I knew exactly what it was and how to mend it... since it was injured to a lesser degree and I already had the leg brace and physical therapy instructions so I didn't even bother going in ;)

I too had many MRI's on my knee and there wasn't any pain.I had a shoulder MRI and the pain during that was unbelievable,I don't know why? I did find out though I have a torn rotor cuff.

Had one 10 days ago to confirm I'm ready for a replacement. As said, no pain, BUT, I'm not used to lying on my back and the knee had begun to affect my back so it didn't take long to become very uncomfortable. I messed up and didn't take any pain meds before the MRI, but wish I had. At one point the tech let me readjust, but that added time to the procedure as he had to reorient the machine. I did have earphones and music and I sure wish I could have fallen asleep. I drove home.

Yooper -

Should be no problem for the 2 hour drive. I think it's a good idea to get it done so they can see exactly the nature/extent of the damage.

Hopefully you won't need surgery, but if you do the orthrascopic procedure is usually a in/out process, with quick heal time. I've had both knees done......

Good luck, hoping for good news for ya!

They gave me earplugs. I had 8 scans that day on my head. They tucked towels around my head and neck and strapped me down so I could not move my head. The humming reminded me of laying in the back of our VW van at night rolling down the highway on vacation as a kid. I was out before the first scan was over. The knocking and tapping was not very loud at all with the ear plugs in. ;)

I had an MRI for my back once that was very uncomfortable. It got pretty hot. After the MRI I mentioned something about it. They had a surprised and concerned look on their faces and said I should have said something during the proceedure. Apparently, the deeper into your body they have to look the higher the juice they have to turn up. To get a full body scan on my back they turned it up. Turn it up too much, and they cook you. It kind of felt like sunburn while it was happening but went away immediately. Anyhow, if you ever feel ANY discomfort during ANY medical procedure, you should ALWAYS speak up and tell them something's not O.K.

When the tech let up from my shoulder mri he said lot of pain huh I said why did you here me screaming in there tongue in cheek and he says no I see it in your eyes. He said doctors are bad about ordering shoulder mris and not prescribing pain meds.

I have the same shoulder to do again here real soon. I think sighting in a .50BMG AR style rifle earlier this summer may have broken loose a spur or something. I am going to make sure they give me a couple percodan or something ahead of time when I go in for this one sonofa.
