There are quite a few 50 BMG rifles being offered these days. Good for trains, planes, and tanks.

I have a 375 H&H...I shoot occasionally. The 416 and 375 are used in Africa for dangerous game...lion, cape buffalo, etc. The 375 is used in Alaska.

I've only "played" around with a Ruger No. 1 in 416 Rigby a couple of times. It was plesant to shoot while standing, and accurate. I didn't have any trouble hitting a 8" target at 150yrds. It has been considered a bit overkill for north american game, but as Elmer Keith said, always use enough gun. I would think for the big bears or big game in the thick stuff it would be a useful tool.

Well, just get the refi on the house ready to buy some ammo. I have shot a Weatherby .416 Rigby, it has a distinct kick to it. It is an African load, like a .470 and .500 Nitro Express. I would suggest a gun a bit more North American useful, but still with plenty of kick..the Weatherby .340. Will take down anything in North America, but can still use it to hunt elk, black bear, etc.

Elmer Keith thought the 30-06 was a bit light for coyotes. His book "****, I Was There" is a good read. I was always a hi velocity small bullet fan, but he was a fun writer and doer.

Elmer was also famous for making long range heavy handgun shots.

Aaaaaaaccckkkkk! You really mean that, don't you Chris? I am guessing you are 1. at least 10 years younger than me (I'm 61) and 2. if you reload, your reloading is fairly recent and doesn't include many pistol cartridges (apologies if I'm wrong).

Elmer Keith was THE grand old man of pistol shooting, handgun hunting, and in general of modern shooting. Tough as nails, a firm believer that anything under 44 in a pistol was not serious, and generally responsible for a lot of bullet, ammunition and ultimately firearms development. Father to the 44 magnum, the Keith-type bullet, the Keith holster, and lots of shooting legends. His life story makes a really good read.

You mean $17/cartridge? Bullets are what cap the finished cartridge! (I'm just being a technical a-hole:laughing:) At any rate, if you decide to go with this caliber, you'll probably want to get into re-loading and roll your own.
