After you sight it in, let us know if your vision is still good or if you have a detached retina. My .338 Win Mag is all I've ever needed for moose & elk, and I probably would have done just as well with my '06

I find the 375 H&H + the 458 Lott make for a nice pair of heavy rifles.

Old thread I know but did not want to start new one. I don't have scoop on .416 Rigby a friend has one on a Thompson contender(single shot) and does not re-load and I've heard ammo can be mucho $. Still obviously the calibur(along with others) has its purpose.
My largest rifle caliburs are 444 MARLIN XLR/ 300 Whetherby custom Vangaurd /Browning BLR in 7 mm WSM/ Browning Medalion 270 WSM.
I'am a big lever fan. Use to own mdl 336c Marlin like many of us 30/30 but a gentleman approached me with whisky on his breath and made me an offer on it I could not refuse , even gave him all my ammo I had for it. He had seen me many a time kill deer and hogs with it. Iron sights never even scope it.

A 416 Rigby in a Contender??? That just shouldn't be. A 416 Rigby puts out 58 foot pounds of recoil in a ten pound safari rifle or about three times what a 30-06 produces. The cost of ammo won't matter as you will never volunteer to shoot it just for fun.

Yes i dont think I should have said contender, forgive me if I've mislead anyone can't think of correct name of Thompson buts it the single shot rifle that for instance he interchanges barrels. He has one in 300 win/mag and one in .416. Id have to go to their W/site to look up name.

I wasn't saying it isn't a Contender, they will try just about anything in that line so your friend may very well have one in 416. I was saying that it was a bad idea and the Contender platform is much too light to manage the recoil from that round. It will be a gun that is traded about as often as it is shot.

Well sure enough they will make you an Encore in 416 Rigby!!! But I don't have many Rhinos or Cape buffalos in my neck of the woods or man eating tigers for that matter. An Encore in 223 or 243 would be a much more useful weapon and a lot more fun to shoot.
