Nybirdman, are you turning by hand?

Sallyb her best one I think was when we first put the chicks in the grass and they decided they didn't like it and one jumped up on her shoe.

No,my incubators have automatic turners, every two hours. That picture is the hatcher;same unit without the turn mechanism.GQF Manufacturing 1202's.We have four plus the hatcher.

Me and my wife have been talking about getting an incubator and hatching eggs. She wants some of the odd/rare/exotic breeds of chickens that often are $20/chick, plus shipping and are hard to find locally.

So, how well do y'all do with mail ordered hatching eggs? Can you still expect ~70% hatch rates, or is it much lower?

I have some araucana chickens and they lay some beautiful eggs.

I have hatched thousands of pheasant over the years;in my first hatch this year I believe I have an albino that hatched;red eyes, white feathers.I have a snow pheasant rooster but he has dark eyes.I have a number of white feathered chicks but they all have dark eyes.
One photo with the dark eyes is the "normal" one and the other "little red",so far he has survived three days ;so I think he can see.

Me and my wife are going to get a 'Little Gaint' brand incubator from TSC this week. One of our friends has fertile duck eggs, so we are going to try it with them first to see how well it works, before ordering any hatching eggs.

This weekend we talked to some friends who remember as kids hatching them on electric heating pads at school. Couple years ago, I put a light bulb in a Styrofoam cooler, and a bowl of water. Egg started to hatch, but chick died before getting out.

Do some reading on hatching.Water-fowl take different humidity settings than chickens, turkeys ect.If you purchase an incubator make sure it has a turner.GQF MFG Co. Inc. has lots of information for hatching.

I'll throw in my $0.02, if it were not for the learning part of the project, I would just buy hatched chicks and skip the incubation process.
