Not to hijack but this seems to go with the subject...

In Hooksett, I went in for a tractor plate for my kubota, they made me put on Construction Equipment plate as they claimed anything with a backhoe on it is considered "Construction Equipment"..(they called the NH-DMV in front of me).....

I mentioned that the backhoe was only an attachment and it would not be on during the plow season (when I need a plate).....Their response after I showed them the invoice was, "Doesn't matter, you bought it new with the backhoe".....

If I could have shown them an invoice with just tractor/fel then they would have given me tractor plate......:confused2:

My Case 580 is registered as a farm tractor as I have a farm (although it's 150 miles from my Case) and it's not used commercially. If you're plowing off your own property the tractor's commercial (construction) whether backhoe is installed or not. Also whether you "bought new" with or without the backhoe is irrelevant, take them a picture without the backhoe or request the police do a VIN verification without the backhoe. Just because they called DMV doesn't prove intelligence on either end. Truth is their way gets them more money. MikeD74T

I should have done my homework better....Thanx Mike.....

What are you getting plats for a tractor for? Do you have to pay for them? Pay a property tax on them? This seems crazy to me.

In Vermont anything you drive on the road either needs a SMV sign or a plate. If it's not farm related then you can't use a SMV sign. To drive my case on the road cost something like $300 a year because of it's weight.

I have my dump truck registered as ag, well it was but hasn't left my property in two years now. I couldn't get a straight answer when I registered it (in VT town can only give you temp tags) at the DMV. Since I was only using it for sugaring (maintaining the road to the sugar house and hauling sap) I felt safe. But I've heard several different stories on what's legal. I've heard 15 mile radius, 25 mile radius, 150 mile radius, and anywhere in state.

Now that gas is closer to $4 a gallon I just drive it around the house. I just can't afford to drive it down the road when I get between 2 to 4 mpg. With fines as expensive as they are it and fuel as pricey as it is I usually just pay someone else.

This town's hungry for $$......anything going down the road in this town needs a plate......forklift, bobcat, TLB, trailer......cheaper to reg it than to pay fine......

Property tax doesn't kick in till it's a car or truck.....(same rate per thousand as the house)....each year.....

It'd be different if it stayed home.......:)

For years and I mean years. 30 or so locally here they try to regulate by discrimination who gets the plates. If you quote the law then youll get them.I think the town clerks are upset that they dont have the power to pick and choose who gets them.I know one past Town clerk said you had to have 20 acres to be eligible. I researched and could find no regulation on it.
Also the farm tractor plates when I renewed they had me sign a statement that I understood the above RSA. I told them that it was for AG plates but they didnt seem to know or care.I signed it as it just said I ahd read and understood the law (pertaining to AG plates).LOL
Then they started with the commericial ones . and got real picky
and the price. oh my.. So I dont bother with any registration now. shaft the farmers again..grrr

That's exactly the case in NH. I have 2 acres, a house, & job in southern NH and a house, barn, & 39 acres in northern NH, 150 miles apart. A few years ago I tried to register my northern tractor up north but the town cleck refused because I'm not a "resident". A funny aside, we were in the same class in school for 12 years in that town. Researching the law I found that NH has a non-resident registration program for vehicles housed in a location in NH other than the owners town or state of residence. In that resaersh I found the farm registration requirements. My "farm" tractor ended up not getting registered because of homeowner insurance issues & lack of need. My southern "construction" tractor is registered "farm" because it never is used commercially & because I have a farm, although it's 150 miles away. Take a copy of the law with you, even to DMV.
