blind dogs get along fairly well. They have other senses that put their sight to shame anyways. My Uncle had a sheepdog that was blind for a long time. He'd bump into walls when moved to a new house for a bit, but eventually get the layout.

Did he tree squirrels and coon? ;)

Vinnie is extremely active and loves running full speed through the woods. He's a danger to himself without being able to see depth.

The sheepdog? It was old when I met it, and I doubt the breed in general is really big on treeing squirels and coons.

Your assumption about your dog's disability is incorect. Dogs don't have much in the way binocular vison with 2 good eyes, so no real depth perception regardless. he will be unaware of things aproaching from behind on his blind-side would be about the extent of it.

I have dogs, love dogs, but I also recognize there are only so many assets/resources. How many wonderful dogs could be saved with that money? It's elective. We often put human characteristics on our animals even though that's not always appropriate. I've seen many happy, great dogs get by with 3 legs or one eye. Actually, I've seen happy dogs with 2 legs. I'm glad you have a good friend that has been with you through some hard times. I hope you continue to enjoy him regardless of the status of his eye.

I have a friend who was born with one working eye. His optic nerve wasn't attached in his right eye. The doctors have said there's nothing that can be done since it's tens of thousands of connections and there's no way of knowing which goes where to his brain. Some of you would say fixing him is elective since he's made it to the ripe age of 36 with only one.

The way some of you talk, I wonder if you'd give your kids braces or let them suffer with nasty teeth their whole lives?

Does Vinnie NEED his right eye for survival? Obviously not. He made it through the swamps of Northern Florida after suffering the injury to it. Would I feel better if he had it back: absolutely!

I'm not deceiving anyone by trying to claim some kind of medically pressing need for this procedure. There is a possible risk it could deteriorate into chronic headaches, glaucoma, and other ailments which are uncomfortable to him. I'm choosing to avert the risk of those situations by electing to do preventative care by fixing his cataract now. If you gave him the choice, would he decide to fix his eye or save how many other wonderful dogs? Who knows, his English isn't that good. ;)

I have 5 kids: one was born to my wife, the other 4 have whiskers and tails.

I'm not an ophthalmologic veterinarian, but I might disagree with your statement. I just had my 9 year old Lab into the vet a month or so ago and asked about the cloudiness in his (the dog's, not the vet) eye. The vet had a technical term for it, but explained that it was kind of like me needing reading glasses now that I'm older. We talked about concerns and he did say that it would affect the dog's depth perception, particularly when it comes to things like stairs. I might be wrong. I might need a new vet.

Jim - I hope that you're able to do what you need for Vinnie. Since I did pay for braces for my kids rather than to let them go through life with crappy smiles, I'm going to kick in a few bucks for Vinnie. He's lucky to have a pal like you. And, THANKS for your service!

Thank you Rock Knocker!

Pet insurance doesn't cover pre-existing conditions, and wouldn't pay out until after a year of coverage anyway.
