In 1981 I was selling the 8000 for 1250 and the 12000 for 1800. The big costs of course is the winch and driveshaft, if you can find something used you can make one pretty reasonably.

Those M8274's and old models are excellent winches, among the best ever made! The motors are available rebuilt from several places and the newer motors draw less power than the originals.

The newer winches don't have as good of bearings (if any) and the brake has to be worked against when power spooling out line which heats up the motor!

I don't see why a surplus 20 ton army winch wouldn't work. If nothing else, you won't tear it up.

Here's another application...

I'm removing hundreds of large commercial truck tires full of mud and water from a creek bed on my property. Creek bed walls are 8' high and bank leading to creek is heavy slope. Only way to pull out materials is by winch.

My tractor is a mid-70's import for Ford so it doesn't have hydraulic hook-ups. I've been killing myself trying to find a winch that utilizes the tractor PTO (instead of electrical system) and can be used as a 3 point hitch attachment. The Farmi is waaaay too expensive as this is a 1-time project and I only paid $3000 for my tractor! Loving you guys right now.

I'm looking to buy something as I don't have time, talent, or tools to fabricate. I was imagining something I could bolt onto an existing scraper blade as to take advantage of the blade as an anchor advantage.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks for the ideas you've already given me!

Dan,

I do not know if the winch off the rear of a crawler would be too big for what you are looking for. I popped onto www.crawlerheaven.com out of Palmyra,NY (near Rochester) and they have a coupled pictured on parts crawlers. You may also want to talk to www.boyceequipment.com and www.vintagepowerwagons.com Boyce is in Utah and has been selling surplus military stuff for many years. It looks like they are listing a 12,000 lb Garwood pto winch w/o cable for $795.00. Vintage Power Wagons sells Braden winches and parts. The type that came on the old Power Wagons. Old wrecker bodies can also be a good place to find a cheap winch. The thing I would think you would want to find out about for the truck winches, is the direction of rotation for the gearbox and the pto speed the winch needs. Good luck in finding something to work for you.
