Anyone miss the larger cars?

Park one of those old large cars beside a modern Honda and you might be surprised which one is bigger.

Nothing like setting sail in a full size land yacht. And so comfortable running down the highway.

huhh? 1993 large car? phfff.

How about a '74 Lincoln Mark IV, or a 74 Ford pick-up. Oh yeah, I miss them.

I have my 74 Merc Cougar setting in the back barn (maybe someday I can afford to restore her, bought that in 87 & was my 1st hot rod.) Built the 400 & C6 it would break free @60mph it's 2nd gear shift point, and at 90 still lift the front end... Almost bought a (then real new) Monty SS street racing when it broke free & did a 90 degree turn.

Used to set on the hood @ drive in with woman snuggled under blankets, worked great window as a laid back & about 10 pillows was like having a hospital bed at the drive in theater! lol (Back seat was good for other things too ;) ) :D

Still one of the best driving & riding cars going, going down freeway on the lazy-boy but no steering feel had to just trust the car to go straight... Funny thing my 91 F150 rides better than 90% of the cars on the road...

Had a good number of Police Crown Vics they are my go to cruisers now.

Size is relative. When I was in college (late 60s) I had a Mercury Comet. In its day it was considered a small car. Fast forward about 20 years, I saw one similar to mine in a junkyard. I was amazed how big it seemed compared to late-80s vintage ones. I put the front seat all the way back, I could not reach the pedals, yet could still fit comfortably in the back. You could almost live in the trunk it was so big. Wish I'd picked it up...didn't look like a rustbucket.

Compare that to your claustrophobic modern car. They may be better in most ways, but styling and comfort are not among them.

I sure miss my '55 Packard. The '86 Lincoln was another boat, but it was not any good in snow. The Packard was. My '01 Jeep TJ does a fairly good job in snow and a great job in mud. But I still miss that old Packard.

I have a 96 Cadillac Deville that I don't drive much anymore. I used to like the older big boat cars but have migrated to newer medium sized cars.

I'm hoping my 1995 Thunderbird will be the last car I ever own. If something happened to it, I would buy another one. The only problem with them is they aren't well suited for ice and snow. They look big, but mine weighs only 3800 lbs., and the 4.6 V8 gets me to 60mph in about 6.5 seconds.

There is no doubt that the modern engineered cars are safer from a perspective of keeping occupants away from the impact. But they also have much less mass so they can be pushed around by a truck or mashed flat by larger vehicles.

Like that UTUBE Video of the OLD 59ish impala vs a NEW one shows some ugly truth on how the damage in them old cars went on thru into passenger compartment vs the newer stuff holding the impact outside the cage.

I had a 59 ford for a while. It was so big I couldn't reach the kids in the back seat.
