Anyone Roll Coal with a Tractor?

Maybe a dumb question, but curious if anyone has or knows how to roll coal with a tractor. I have only a GC1705 but....

Just thinking out loud. Maybe I just need to get me a diesel truck.

The older I get (I'm only 28) every time I see one of these idiots dump black smoke out of their exhaust the more I roll my eyes.

My, my, a bit quick to pass judgment based on stereotypes. I'm neither a guy who wastes fuel nor a stupid kid driving daddy's truck. I simply like it and wondered if it could be done with a tractor since that's my only diesel. Besides it's not wasting fuel if you get something in return. Using your logic I waste fuel lighting brush pile fires but from my perspective it's not wasted since it clears a pile of debris off my land.

Do you mean like spreading and packing it? I would use a box scraper, and dampen the coal occasionally to help it pack, Once spread, then you could roll it I would just use a lawn roller, they are usually filled with water for ballast........

I wouldn't call it rolling coal, but if I put my jd750 in high gear and dump the throttle I get a little gray smoke and an eye roll from swmbo. ��

I don't roll or burn coal anymore. Black Angus Ribeyes taste so much better seared quickly over the direct flame then moved over to smoke on the cool side of a MESQUITE WOOD fire. That is, of course, after the steaks have marinated for 24 hours with a liberal coating of Tony Chachere's seasoning on them! Yum yum!

Not for fun & profit. There is a spot on my trip to the woodlot where 3rd gear / High range combined with accelerating after slowing to check traffic before crossing over a steeply crowned roadway while towing the trailer & log splitter causes it for about 5 seconds.

Oh yeah, and there are times running the brush hog when my gear selection s a little high for an overgrown patch.

Sorry, pal. By definition you are wasting fuel. Smoke is incompletely burnt fuel. Wasted fuel. The only 'things' gotten from it are your jollies and more pollution.

To be absolutely clear, it means your engine is being delivered more fuel than it needs to do the work it is being asked to do. In other words, it's running "rich" versus "lean."

I don't know how it's any different. If it's rich there is unburned fuel in the exhaust.

Rolling coal may be silly to some and not others. Look at all the other odd things people do with vehicles. Lights under body, thin rubber on oversize wheels with spinners, lifted 4x4's,lower trucks, etc., etc.

Because someone doesn't find it appealing doesn't necessarily mean it's stupid. I could say the same about idiotic and excessive tattoos.

"Being asked" is vastly different than brung capable. The only way to "ask" any engine to produce more power is to add more fuel and air.
You could "ask" your tractor to run a 15' batwing mower, but it's not capable. This would create all the black smoke you want.

I understand that people are into things. Not necessarily knocking it. Just don't understand this one -- perhaps because I see it as a showing off the engines limitations rather than it's ability.

I'm 60 years old and an ole coal roller since 1990 and I can roll coal with my Ford 1720 SSS!
I installed a turbo on it years ago to give it the power it needed to work the way I wanted it to work.
I would estimate that it will develop 35~to40hp at 10psi boost.
It generally runs at 2 to 5 psi but the additional reserve hp will pull it thru those conditions that would stall it before.
It has been absolutely trouble free and now handles a 60" rototiller and snow blower easily.
It will ROLL COAL if I hammer it but as was mentioned it is a waste of fuel so I ease into it slowly to avoid it.
It typically runs clean but will roll some when a heavy load is put on it but it is very brief.
I have 12 gears so I adjust speed to the load.

The engine in your tractor appears to be a 1.1L Iseki. Doubtful there is much in the way of tuning available.

Exactly. Compensating, I think. For what; anyone's guess.

I have no idea if my LS tractor releases black smoke when loaded a bit since the exhaust if at the cab roof line and impossible to see from the seat. I don't have any thing to overload it with so it is a mute point.

If you want your engine to last for a long time, "rolling coal" is not the way to do it.
