Chipper Anyone use a PTO chipper?

I have a Bearcat chipper shredder and while I have never plugged it, the lack of a blower to direct the chips into a wagon slows down the process.
The shredder feature is handy for small stuff and leaves and if it fits in the chipper opening it will chip it. It will give you a pretty good workout feeding it. I used to borrow a friends Troybuilt and found it to be good for chipping branches as straight as bamboo fishing rods and shredding leaves only if they were drier than popcorn farts
Unless you have substantial HP in a stand alone, a PTO machine seems to be the obvious way to go IMHO

I have a Woods 5000 Chipper/Shredder (which is probably the same machine Studor has, since Woods sell a Bearcat manufactured chipper).

Very handy piece of equipment, and I use the shredder much more then I expected to. The downside is, as studor wrote, the chips fall underneath the machine. There is a blower kit available for the machines.

For a residential owner who gets a mix of brush, downed limbs and branches, the Woods 5000 is a very good addition to the implement stable. You'll want 15-30 PTO HP to run it...the closer to 30 PTO HP, the happier you'll be. The weight of the 5000 is 450 lbs, so even a smaller machine can handle it.

I am looking at a PTO chipper for my Kubota B2920 (21 HP at the PTO). From what I am seeing, it's a minimum investment of $1800-2000, and maybe as much as $2700-3000 for a decent one. Does that sound right? That is quite an expense to swallow.

Of course, the alternatives aren't great -- a $750 standalone gas powered model with only about 3.5" capacity, or a $200/day Vermeer rental that is too big to get into the woods (so I'd have to bring the brush to it). So a 3-point mounted PTO unit is ideal.

I bought my Woods off Craigslist. PTO chippers are posted on there occasionally. Use Search Tempest to increase your search area.
I paid $1000 for a fairly lightly used machine and, considering it's condition (very good), a fair price.
PTO chippers sell pretty fast, so when you see one, you don't want to hem and haw...you want to go look at it and, if it meets your needs, buy it.With any PTO powered implement, I suggest you ask the seller to see it operate. I did, and it chipped quite well.

I have a 5" BearCat with a blower that is great on my 30 hp tractor.I can blow chips into the woods or into my truck. I bought it used for $1200 about 6 years ago. It took a long time (years) to find a used one.

Yeah, same chipper I have except I don't have the blower.
I've read mixed reports about the blower...how's your's work?

I put 60 hours on a borrowed 6" Jinma auto feed PTO chipper and was so happy I bought one for myself.

I've got a Chinese 6" chipper too, turned by 35 PTO hp. It'll eat softwood and brush all day long, but bogs down occasionally when fed 5" and 6" hardwood. So given your 33 PTO horsepower, stick with the previously mentioned 4" and smaller stuff - and the Chinese chipper offers good value for the money. Price might be a little dated, but mine was $1350 out the door in June of 2010

Does anyone have a chipper they use, and like? I have been wondering about using one on my MF1260. I have rented the Vermeer stand alone chippers and they work well. I have a Troybuilt 8 hp chipper, and it works not so well for the amount of material I have. I have an endless supply of 1-4" limbs and treetops, and outdoor burning bans to contend with.

Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

I have a Salsco chipper. I did a lot of research before I got it over 4 years ago and decided it was the best for my needs. They have many models to fit your requirements. You can't go wrong with one and they are built in the country with good quality parts and steel.
A lot of folks on TBN seem to really like the wallenstein brand as well but can't comment .
