Can I get your Sketch up plans? (.skp's) I think that's exactly what I want to build, size-wise. I want to build it "pole-barn" style, as I've got access to Amish rough-cut hemlock. Is that what you did? Also how did you post it as a Jpeg? I want to share some plans that I drew for my Stump Grinder project, but don't see that I can save them as a jpeg. I thought I'd have to take a digital photo of a hard copy! Thanks in advance. ~Scotty

yes, you're welcome to the plans.....30x34......garage doors a foot taller and wider than standard....i have a complete upstairs.....you can stand in the middle about 8' wide and then it tapers to a 3' knee wall.......i built it just like a pole barn but used osb and vinyl siding instead of steel.....

my plans are at work, send me your email and i'll email them to you....i don't know if my man door and garage doors are exactly as my real garage...i just guessed at them in the sketch....i tried to add ceiling joists and rafter but didn't get that far......

when i saved it, i used "export file" and then made sure it was set to .jpg.......i didn't use save or save as.......export file is under the file pull down menu, just the same as save.....

I sent you a private message! I'm think of the OSB and siding route also, and like the higher door deal! I saw that 'export' option, but it didn't seem to give me a jpg option. Are you using the "for-Buy" version? I'm just using the free-be. ~Scotty

i have the free version.....when you export, there will be a window open.....then, at the bottom there is a space where you can name the file....under that, there is a space where you can use the drop down menu (file type).....click the down arrow and select .jpg....

i'll try to get those to you today....i got your pm.....

i'll find an old link where i detailed it more on garagejournal.com......

Alltoys - looks like you got into some out-of-parallel lines between the store and shop? sections of your building. SU is quite sensitive to having the lines drawn parallel and perpendicular. Luckily when you're drawing the cursor drags a line that shows up in red or green to let you know you're right.
I have the pro version, have used it for years for presentations for additions, etc., and cabinetwork in my building business. It is not cadd, more like what it's named - sketch. I don't think the free version is much limited, though the pro version lets you use keyboard shortcuts between different tools as opposed to clicking on a toolbar so it's faster to use.
Sketchup is not the best at things like putting windows into walls that have thickness in the drawing, you just have to get used to how it works. I tried (and own) several cadd programs and like SU better. I guess it's the way I think - in 3D. You can concentrate on your design, not the wow! features of a cadd program.
Also last year I sent a Sketchup drawing to an outfit that drew house plans from my drawing, suitable for permitting. That cost about 50 cents a square foot, cheaper than I could do it. Very little error back and forth.

My Apple computer has only one button under the mouse pad. Would this be a problem with any of these programs? Are any tutorials done on on a Mac?

wow, that looks great....

how'd you do your angles (everything i've done has been on x,y or z... and radius where the edge of the circle turns in to a straight line.....

For the angles on parts in the first drawing, I draw in a flat plane. For example, Start with a 3"x5" rectangle. place the hole as required. For the 'rounded bull-nose' on some of those last parts, I used the same center point as the hole, and drew a second circle, to the desired size, then drew lines of the material I wanted to remove from an edge, to a tangent point on the larger circle. Then erase all lines that don't consist of the final, outside edge of the part. Then with the 'push command' I push it to the desired thickness. In this case 3/8". It's really tuff to describe, but the key is do all your drawing like you would on a flat piece of paper, before you push it into 3-d. I'll e-mail you that first drawing in .skp, and you can play with it. ~Scotty
