Oil & Fuel Anyone use Synthetic oil from your local parts store for oilchange?

It's not such a big deal on the smaller engines but when you start needing 5 gallons of oil, the price of synthetic get's astronomical.

Diesel engines seem to run forever on just dino diesel oil (e.g. Rotella). I don't know about you, but I'm sure I will never see 10 or 20 or 30,000 hours on my tractors.

When you run synthetic oil you need to run a filter that is for a for synthetic oil to get the extended change intervals, because they filter down to less microns. If you use a conventional oil filter you would still have to change it at the regular intervals. I don't know if a filter for synthetic oil would even be available for your tractor.

I'm not far away from my second oil change on my L3200. First one (at 50 hours) I used Kubota oil and filter, but I have wondered what would be wrong (if anything) with using synthetic oil in my tractor like I use in all my vehicles. Kubota service said it would be fine to do this, but I wanted opinions / input on the advantages or disadvantages if any. I know that synthetic has always protected my gasoline engines very well and seems to hold up longer in case I go a little over in mileage between oil changes, so I assumed the same would stand true with a deisel engine, plus I would probably save or break even in the cost of the oil change and in my opinion have a better oil in my tractor seeing that "Kubota" brand oil is about 4.99 to 6.99 a qt. which is around the same price I would pay for synthetic oil at Auto zone or Advance Auto parts.:cool2:

I run 8000 mile oil changes on my over the road vehicles with M1 TDT 5w-40 synthetic and regular oil filters. Never had a problem, even cut some of the oil filters apart fpr inspeciton, and sent oil samples in for lab analysis, no problems. Most tractor owners like us probably do not run extended intervals, I change my Kubota oil every 2 years, almost 200 hours, use Kubota oil filter plus M1 5w-40 synthetic oil. No need to hunt down a special oil filter when using synthetic oil. Where did you get this information at? Philip.

Not to start another synthetic vs conventional oil debate, but I have found that in sub zero winter temps in all my vehicles, including my diesel truck, Kubota, and generator, that they crank over and start much easier when using synthetic 5w-40 vs conventional 15w-40. The oil pressure comes up quicker with the synthetic also. I've had oil analysis done on he Duramax, and the results were excellent (using Mobil Turbo diesel truck) and showed the oil could easily go beyond 20k oil change intervals with the bypass filtration. I still change it at 10k though, just for my own peace of mind. Two very good, easily obtainable diesel rated synthetic oils are Mobil Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40 (aka Mobil Delvac 1) and Shell Rotella 5w-40.

If you are going to service your tractor per Kubota's reccommendations you'll never know the difference between any good CJ-4 rated oil. NAPA has had a very good buy on their 15W40 CJ-4 rated oil @$9.99gal. It's made buy Ashland which is Valvoline's parent company. Some synthetics do not protect as well as some conventional oils. Alot more important is the quality of the additives as well as the quantity of the additives. I run all synthetic fluids in all my stuff but I also do the used oil analysis to determine interval times. Really, if you are going to stay close to Kubota's conservative intervals just pick your favorite CJ-4 rated oil and your Bota engine will outlast you. In off-road applications, high quality air filtration is way more important than one brand CJ-4 oil versus another.

If you are using regular Mobile 1, that's bad. Diesels need a diesel rated oil. Regular Mobile 1 is NOT diesel rated AFAIK. There are diesel rated synthetics.

Read a little slower. It says M1 TDT 5w-40. It is a HDEO. TDT stands for Turbo Diesel Truck. Also, Mobil 1 0w-40 and 15w-50 are rated API CF for light duty automotive diesel engines as well. Any other wisdom you would like to add? Philip.
