Oil & Fuel Anyone use Synthetic oil from your local parts store for oilchange?

/ Anyone use Synthetic oil from your local parts store for oilchange? #21
One advantage I have found with synthetic motor oil in my Tundra, is that synthetic is available in 0-20. During the cold weather I feel this is better. Years ago when I drove Tacomas with the manual 5 speeds, the transmissions did not shift real smootly. When I switched to synthetic gear oil in the transmission, the difference was like night and day especially during the cold weather.

Read a little slower. It says M1 TDT 5w-40. It is a HDEO. TDT stands for Turbo Diesel Truck. Also, Mobil 1 0w-40 and 15w-50 are rated API CF for light duty automotive diesel engines as well. Any other wisdom you would like to add? Philip.

Read a little more completely ;-) He said he uses the TDT is his over the road trucks, he just said M1 5-40 in his tractor. If he meant a diesel rated oil, then fine, but let's keep it clear for anyone who doesn't know the difference, okay? :)

Mobil 1 only makes one blend of 5w-40, and it is a heavy duty engine oil. Lets keep it clear and present facts instead of AFAIK with a bunch of misleading and wrong information. Not trying to be rude. Philip.

No problem Philip, there are a lot of little but important details that many on here may miss. From what I can tell from the Mobil website:

Mobil 1 5w-20 gas engines only
Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40: fully synthetic motor oil is engineered for hard-working diesel engines.

The "typical" Mobil 1 is not for diesels.

I agree that for the unwary, looking at viscosity ratings alone is inadequate, even for M1 oils. You gotta look at the doughnut on the can and match the specs with your owner's manual if you wanna maintain your engine properly.

And, NAPA, K&N, Mann, and other quality filter manufacturers have filters for extended service synthetic oils.

I use Mobile 1 synthetic in all my cars...gasoline engines
And I use the appropriately labeled mobile 1 synthetic oil in all my diesel engines, pickup, tractor and Mercedes van

Pappasmurf, this synthetic vs dino oil is a long running discussion .... you can read about it forever on TBN...

It's kinda a religious discussion...and typically boils down to "I believe, therefore I'm doing it my way" decision.

Read, believe what you wish, choose carefully....the only mistake you can actually make is to use a fluid rated for gasoline engines in a diesel engine. This is true for fuel and engine oil.

I'd say Chevron Delo gets more recommendations than most. Diesel rated oils contain dispersants that deal with the combustion byproducts far better than gasoline engine oils. With diesels, oil change frequency outweighs oil longevity. There have been problems with auto turbines coking oil after shutoff, but that's really a design flaw. There are a LOT of big rigs with turbos running Delo.

I run 8000 mile oil changes on my over the road vehicles with M1 TDT 5w-40 synthetic and regular oil filters. Never had a problem, even cut some of the oil filters apart fpr inspeciton, and sent oil samples in for lab analysis, no problems. Most tractor owners like us probably do not run extended intervals, I change my Kubota oil every 2 years, almost 200 hours, use Kubota oil filter plus M1 5w-40 synthetic oil. No need to hunt down a special oil filter when using synthetic oil. Where did you get this information at? Philip.

I sold amsoil and you had to use their filter to get the extended oil change interval. Purolator evens says you can go longer with their filter. Go to 3rd paragraph.

Some companies like valvoline are saying you can not go longer on your oil changes. See #3 Valvoline.com > FAQs > Motor Oil Car FAQs > Full-Synthetic Motor Oil
You would need a filter like a Napa Platinum. Synthetic oil is still crude oil it is just refined more.

Extended oil changes mean different things to different people. I only go 8K miles between oci, to some that is long, to others that is short. I base my oci on a uoa (used oil analysis) program, so I know I am safe with the oil and filters I am using. If we wanted to go extreme for really long oci, we should be talking about by-pass oil filtration! Not sure how an article from 'Modern Tire Dealer' got in here about extended oil changes, it looks more like an add for Purolator, which is my filter of choice (standard version). This add says all Purolator oil filters are compatible with synthetic oil, which is the point I was trying to make, no special filter needed for synthetic oil. It also says to take advantage of extended drains, thre are more effecient filters on the market with diffrent media, the point you are trying to make. What is an extended drain is the question the operator needs to determine, I do this with a uoa. Pertaining to the Valvoline FAQ link, they say 'use manufacturers recommended oil change intervals', looks like a statement to stay out of court to me. What would Amsoil say about this? Valvoline also says you can use any type of oil filter with their synthetic oil. Personally, if you are going to mess around with extended oil change intervals, you take risk, but a good oil sample and a good used oil analysis program will keep you safe with whatever oil filter and lubricating oil you wish to combine. Good links! Philip.

Amsoil has the wix platinum which is design for synthetic oil and their own filters for 15k and 25k miles.
