Time to buy an new lawn mower and curious if anyone has used the flail mower.
1.) is it more of a rough-cut or finish
2.) what's price for a 1430 (PT site is down for me tonight)?
3.) is it more of a finished, manufacutred product or the PT-typical boxy cut and weld stuff (which I don't have a problem with except on my brush-cutter... only attachment I'm not super pleased with)?

My recollection is when I talked to Terry about it a few years ago, it was a finish type of flail mower. I needed a rough cut. In 2010, the 8' flail mower for the 1850 was $5,000. I do not have a recent price list for the 1430 and accessories.

I don't think flail mowers make good finish mowers. They tear and pulverise the grass blades. I would put them in the class of rough cut, not finish.

I have a 72 flail mower that I use on my 1445.

It can be rough cut or fine cut or slice the ground.

It all depends on the blade type installed.

When I purchased the used flail, it had straight blades for thatch removable.

This is where I purchased the fine cut blades and hangers.

Flail-Master - Mower Replacement Parts, Commercial Riding Mower Parts, Rotary Cutter Parts, Blade grinders, Trimmer Line, Mowing Accessories - Flail Master - Flailmaster -

You might even be able to install hammer blades for extream rough cut, depending on the width of the blades /hammers.

You can even switch rotors to handle large blades.

I believe mine used 88 sets of blades, two blades per hanger.

David,

Have you seen the grass around schools, it is mostly done with flail mowers fine cut.

They also use the flail for safety reasons around public places, parks, schools, play grounds, etc.

The reputation is that flail mowers don't eject objects as far as rotary mowers, so they are used in parks, around schools, along highways, etc. Because the blades are on linkages, they are somewhat tolerant of unmowable objects.

Just for comparison, Brush Hog recommends shutting their brush cutter down if anyone comes within 300'...

Perhaps I have never seen one with the right blades, but I think of them more in the rough cut than fine cut type mower. YMMV.

All the best,

Peter

All the schools, universities, golf courses and municpalities around here use zero turn mowers or large Toro's with big front mounted articulated decks on the lawns. The only place I see flail mowers is on the highway mowing crews. They usually have one on the back and one to the right side.

Folks, I have noticed that after turning off the PTO switch, the blades on my 48" PT Brush Cutter will continue to spin for at least 15 seconds before completely stopping. Its not safe to let anyone approach the mower until you see that the blades have stopped.
