Apparently too much junk

I went to a local Ford only junkyard today, and bought a broken fender. I wanted something to try out different types of epoxy on.Turned out the broken fender had already been patched. Talking to the owners son while he pulled it off, he recommended a body shop down the street that does their plastic bumper repairs. I stopped by there and he was extremely helpful, telling me where to pick up the "problem plastic epoxy" made by Simmins (spelling?). I asked him if he did that type of work, and how much money. (figured he would say replace it like all the rest of the body shops) He said he could fix it for about $350, so I asked how much to paint it after that. He said that included the paint, so I guess that broken fender will join the pile of junk out back, and I paid $25 for the information of where to find someone to do the job.

that's why you don't take it to a shop.

100$ worth of stuff from napa or car quest woulod fix that fender .. could start it on a sunday morning and be driving it monday..

Exactly. That looks like a small job for a talented body repair guy, but the body shops they work for don't make very much at all from small jobs. Thus, they would rather sell you a new fender & paint rather than messing with trying to repair a cracked one.

Bought the whole take off bed from a dealer that installs alum flat beds. As not every body buys a cab and deletes the bed. If you really tear up the dually tailgate and fender the flat bed is the way to go. The end result is a nicer more usable truck.

yep.. and that 350 $ he was quote.. I bet 100$ of it is 'stuff' and the rest is hand time..

I knew someone would fix it.. like I said.

I don't doubt I could to it for that amount if it were mine.. paint and all.. just free time.. etc...

That's actually a pretty good price...There's a lot of time invested for a dime sized repair and a basketball sized one..A little more body work on the bigger hit, but all of the sundry prep is very similar...When they can pull 10X that off of an insurance paid collision and only invest a couple of more days, is it any wonder most pro shops will pass.

BC/CC paint costs and other need chemicals are like playing the commodity markes as well...That stuff is getting insane..That's one of the main reasons I got out of doing resorations and repairs such as the OP's...I kinda liked doing that stuff too.

i don't doubt they would rather doa swap and paint and charge more and have less hand time and more profit. iw as just saying it could be done, and actually at a pretty reasonable cost.. especially if done in yer back yard.

No doubt it could be a DIY job...The paint is expensive if you go BC/CC

yep.. I do SS painting.. much cheaper.

the paint needed for a fender would be a pint.. figure 20 $ for that with a paint match fromthe door code.. etc..
