Apple hires 800 at $8/hr

Who pays Volt for their services? Who tells Volt the wage rates for people hired? You are splitting hairs as far as the $8/hour issue is concerned.

Why Apple would hire Volt is worthy of another thread. :)

Its much more sanitary for Apple, thats for sure. Volt gets the dirty work.

So it is actually Volt Work Solutions that interviewed more than 1,000 people in Elk Grove and were looking to fill 800 positions. Perhaps you can update the title of this post with the accurate information?

Ummm.... nah

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Crazy that we compete with 30 cents/hr. wages from China. Import tariffs is the answer.

I'm with you. Tax goods coming in from places like china and watch manufacturing in the usa take off. Look at Japanese cars-in many cases more of a toyota is manufactured in the usa than a chevy.

I 've worked for $8 an hour about 12 years ago when I was living with my parents. After insurance , groceries and gas to go to work there was't much left even at a time of $1.75 gallon gas. I was also paying for schooling at a local community college.

The video showed one interviewee mentioning she "hoped" the jobs were with Apple, but I saw nothing anywhere indicating that is really the case. But if it was Elk Grove, those are all contractor-staffed warehouse jobs as it's simply a distribution center.

At their Silicon Valley and Austin campuses, Apple is among the highest paying employer in the area and they treat people very well, with free meals (even allowing families to join for dinner), free transportation, health/fitness/well-being comps, and lots of perks. Whether or not it's because they value people, the simple fact is that they have to do this in order to retain people. You will not find much salary/perks difference between the top tech companies these days, as employee retention is a priority. Some of them even have anti-poaching agreements with each other.

Google and Apple are among those that have some of the nicest perks. I came close to interviewing for jobs with both companies, and working there sounded like going on vacation compared to my current job, which is already way better than most. I would not hesitate to recommend high-tech workers interview with Apple or Google -- they take extremely good care of their people.

If you have an axe to grind, it should be with factory conditions in China, where people work like dogs. Apple is well ahead of the rest of the industry there, but it's still pretty much a sweat shop. More info at: Apple's Chinese factories improved working conditions - Business - CBC News

Well then, in the spirit of a good debate, please prove your statement with facts that "Apple hires 800 at $8/hr".

Did you watch the newscast? If you feel like debating, the onus is on you. Prove that in Elk Grove, this week, Apple planned on paying more than $8. I'm not accommodating when someone tells me where to sit. It's a character flaw...

Let's break this down. There are a lot of variables. First, the original broadcast indicated that Apple was the company doing almost all the hiring. That makes sense because like I said, there isn't much else in Elk Grove. Whether they are hiring through a contractor or not does not make any difference, they are still paying at the poverty level. Distribution work is no less meaningful than most any other type of work, in my opinion.

In Silicon Valley there is much competition for engineering personnel. Those types of employees are not Germaine to the topic. How are the administrators and blue collar workers treated who are not lucky enough to be situated in the headquarter buildings? Speaking of the engineering staff however, we hired a good number of them away from Apple to work for us at Intel. I won't bother to repeat the reasons why some of them left but the problems were from the top down and had to do with unreasonable demands on personal time and unwarranted retribution when all did not go as planned.

Yes, my axe to grind has very much to with the way some companies treat all the people that work for them. Including those in China. If a company doesn't give a you-know-what about people in China, why would they care about people anywhere?

I'm sorry, but I don't see any facts in your response.

You certainly have the right to say anything you like in public, but I hope you understand the potential legal implications of your declarative statement that "Apple hires 800 at $8/hr" without any apparent factual basis.

This is my last post on this subject.

Don't be sorry, it was never a requirement that I convince you of anything, despite your posts to the contrary. Legal implications? Please.... Hang on, I think I may see black helicopters circling my house.
