My front tires 8-16 Ag tires are pretty worn so I ordered some online. These new ones are 8-16 but look about 2 inches narrower. Granted they are not mounted yet, but want to verify if I need to look for something different before I go through the process only to find I can't seat them because my rims are too wide.
Comparing diameters between old and new they seem close enough although the old ones are quite worn.
Just wondering if 8-16 is the only info or is there another number that would dictate the tread width vs rim width.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

From Google: An 8-16 agricultural (Ag) tire has an 8-inch nominal width, fits a 16-inch diameter rim, and typically has an overall diameter around 31 inches, though exact specs vary by brand and tread (R-1, R-2, etc.), with ~8-inch sidewalls, making the total height roughly 32 inches (16" rim + 8" sidewall + 8" sidewall)

But look at, and compare, the load and pressure ratings. Just like trailer tires, there are at least 3 load letter designations I have to deal with. You could weigh the new and old tires. Funny how some worn out 12 ply baloney skins can still be heavier than their replacements. Tread depth and spacing is another ingredient.

Thanks for the reply. The old ones are still mounted until I'm pretty sure there's not something I'm missing. The unmounted width is what concerns me. The sidewalls are pretty stiff, and these could have taken a set being at the bottom of some big stack of tires. There's about 4 inches between the sidewalls and my rims must be about 8 inches. I'm only guessing since they're still mounted on the tractor.

Can you cut a few pieces of wood to the width of rim and insert them in the bead of new tires to compare how they look unmounted? Helps if tires are warm when you do this.

I ordered a set of tires from a reputable seller on ebay for my Steiner. The tires that came in were very well marked as such, but were definitely not the same size. I think there are times when the chinese fail to get the conversion to English just right. The seller offered to send me a new set, but once we measured them, every one he had was too small. I still needed them, so I kept them and he added a note to his ebay store to reflect the smaller size.

10.50x23x12 was the tire size for the Steiner if I remember correctly, and 8.50x23x12 was what they were equivalent to. (I had that size on another machine)

I know this will not help at present; steel rims have the sizes stamped on the inside of the rim.
I agree, some Chinese tires are not the actual size of older American-made tires. I bought 1 600-16 front tire last fall and it was actually 1½" taller than the other side tire, and narrower by 1" when mounted.
The solution; buy the same brand as the take-offs.

Are you sure they didn't sell you 8.00 - 16 when you need 8-16? Not the same thing.

Comparison of 6.00 x 12 (the taller tire) and a 6-12.

Got them mounted. They are not quite as wide but diameter is about the same although the old ones were very worn.
Thanks for some useful responses.

I can’t really speak to tractor tires as my selling and factory touring from years ago was in auto/ light truck tires.
1) tire sizes in metric and even older light truck tires like a 31-10.50R15 are actually or were when i was working in tire sales a mold measurement.
If you change tire brands (even when made by same parent company) you could find some small size variations. Even with in the same tire brand different lot numbers could experience slight variations.
With tractor tires, I know from personal experience and after the fact research that X.00-XX tractor tires are a different size tire than a X-XX (to use the OP size a 8-16 and a 8.00-16 are 2 different sizes).
In todays world where 99+% of are tractor tires seem to come from China (where it also QC is next to nonexistent it seems), I would suggest always buying 2 tires at a time and making sure they are from the same lot number.
