I heard many years ago that heating the paper up with a hair dryer can bring back the image of a receipt that has faded away. I have a folder in which I put all the receipts in when building my house many years ago. Nothing but blank sheets of paper mostly now.

I think part of the reason that refrigerators (and other appliances) have less of a lifetime is because of all the bells and whistles the newer stuff has.

Scan the receipts into your pc when you get them. Back up your pc to the cloud. You will have your receipts for as long as you want them.

In almost all cases the answer is no, no one makes a reliable refrigerator. One of the reasons is that most of them buy components from a single source, so many of the refrigerators, under the skin are the same. Almost all the GEs use Embarco compressors from Mexico or China

I had a GE counter depth go out last summer. I did a trouble shoot off youtube and traced the probable cause to an inverter board on the compressor. Well, a repair would have cost me $650 from the repairman. The board alone was $250 from Amazon or AppliancePro or someone like that, or $30 via epacket from China, for an original equipment part. I bought the part from China, took two weeks to get, and about 30 minutes to change the attaching plug and replace. Refrigerator runs like new. By the way, why would a refrigerator need and inverter board you might ask? Because most of the newer high efficiency ones have a 3 phase compressor so they slow down rpm via hertz or cycles. Saves electricity, but the boards tend to short out over time.

My advice is either trouble shoot it yourself if you can before you replace it, it may be something really simple like mine.

Also to get the cost and performance efficiencies they want the metals, electronics and plastics are reduced to the thinnest, minimum or lightest possible. Everything is taken down to as close as possible to the design point, safety factors are considered waste. It never used to be that way.

Engineered that way by design , the average time people stay in one residence was figured out to be seven years so the appliances live span was built to that standard, or so I was told by an appliance tech.

I think in the past 30 years appliance companies has done more research on how to make their appliances not last anymore then 10 years, just the opposite of car manufactures, I remember when car motors lasted if lucky, 100,000 miles before rebuild..............

I guess living in a neighborhood of homeowners of 50 to 60 years in the same home is an annomoly?

My parents are/were extremely frugal but when they bought they wanted reliability and willing to pay for it... I write this at moms watching a 40+ year Zenith 25 inch TV...

We really did build quality... so much so there was a thriving market in Vienna 35 years ago for American Refrigerators... even having to use a stepdown transformer.

Yes! I lived in my previous house for 30 years and when we moved both the moving company and the real estate agent commented that we'd lived in the house far longer than a typical homeowner did.

We lived 28 years in the last house. That was by far the longest in one house. I hope to get that many years in this one and the next 2 or 3. I plan to live a long time

We recently bought a new kitchen suite and went with LG. I talked at length with the guy at Lowes who's been selling appliances his whole life. LG was what he recommended. He said stay away from Samsung. I commented that I liked some of the Fridgedaire appliances and he said stay away from them too. Many manufacturers may have a good appliance, say a fridge, but their dishwasher might be plagued with reliability issues. In my mind, I focused on the two main appliances, fridge and stove, and then stuck with that same manufacturer for the dishwasher and microwave. Truth be told, I hate dishwashers and would rather just hand wash the dishes. But the wife....

I know folks that have bought GE (GE Profile) kitchen suites and they had nothing but problems with one appliance or the other.

I think what folks are saying about longevity is spot on. They've now been designed to have a reasonable life, 10- 15 years.
