Curious if drive (V-pulley) belts are sold with different grades or strength. I was looking at the selection at my local TSC store and I could not determine if a belt is rated in some way.

The only difference was the base material used in its construction and of course it's price.

I own a Troy-Bilt Tomahawk chipper-shredder (I call it "Fargo" from the movie "Fargo"). Seems like I go through too many belts in one season. Maybe I'm buying the wrong type of belt?

I started buying belts for my TroyBilt Tomahawk at a commercial-market V belt place in Baton Rouge. Think I bought one belt in 5 years now here in central Va. Sold it recently with one of the belts from Baton Rouge still on it. Think I bought a spare belt from a repair place here in Charlottesville.

Used to buy them from TroyBilt in Baton Rouge, and they'd last 2 or 3 uses, at the most, before I discovered that commercial belt place.

The guys who bought the TroyBilt forgot the spare belt and pusher block. I also have some spare metal parts for them to pick up. Guess they'll call and come by eventually. They know to call first, as they saw my "Bare Trail Run" sign out front.

This says that there are but it does not give any details.

V-belts are sized according to horsepower to be transmitted, therefore there doesn't need to be different grades. But in reality some manufacturers belts seem to be longer lived than others. Make sure the belts are under the proper tension and the pulley's are in line. Any slippage will decrease belt life.

There are several grades and coverings available.

V belts are not all created equally. They have different sizes, [ width and depth] and different load transmitting materials. [ amount and material]

Pick one specified for your use.

Are there any part#s on the belt. You can interchange that # to Gates on the site or I can take it to work and cross it there.

If no #s, the width, length, and height and get 2-3 that's close and try em till one fits.

A quick rule of thumb is that "A" and "B" grade belts are heavy duty belts while "L" grade belts are only suitable for light duty use. For example, a 4L340 belt is a 1/2" wide belt for light duty use, normally something like a furnace blower. A 5L belt would be a light duty 5/8" belt, while something like an A340 belt is a heavy duty 1/2" belt and a "B" is a heavy duty 5/8" belt.

An "L" duty belt will only last a short time in a high load application.
