Another story

I have a friend who is a flight instructor. We used to fly a couple times a month for weekend dinner at various airports within a 100-200 miles of home. The wives went with us and I got to stack hours on my log book toward a license. Good deal for me as we split the cost of renting the Cessna 172 we usually went in.

This friend would not drive around the block without wearing a seat belt and this was in the 70s. However, he would think nothing of flying in marginal weather and fly around thunderstorms etc. So one afternoon we were flying to Morgantown W Va. They had an OK restaurant there. The weather wasn't so good. We went anyway. So the 4 of us were landing and a big gust of wind caught us and almost flipped us over on our back. All of us in the plane knew it was quite an antic but in didn't seem all that bad. As I remember, the restaurant was along side the strip. We parked and went into the airport building. Ther were about 2 ticket desks and I happened to know the agent that was there. He saw me and the rest walk in and made some comment like, "Were you in the plane that almost landed on it's back? Man, everyone thought you were all finished. " He went on to tell us that about 1/2 the people in the restaurant jumped to window to watch and see if we might lose it again. We were celebrities for a while, but we didn't expect that. Of course, as student at the time, my friend was the "pilot in command."

Now that I think about it, this same "pilot in command" tried to take off on a taxi way in Wheeling, W Va. while we were doing some night flying. Never thought much about it till now. Hmmmm.

Cheers....Coffeeman

I may have told this story before, but here goes...
One afternoon we had huge thunderstorms and tornados. Much damage was done and a trailer park was wiped out about 2 blocks from our home. Storms continued into the night, but we finally fell asleep to flashes of lightning in the distance. About 11:30 I heard the wind pick up something awful. It was getting louder and the windows started shaking. It sounded like a freight train and I was sure a tornado was near. I jumped out of bed, grabbed my pregnant wife by the arm and dragged her out of bed and into the hallway on her knees. I then dumped her there, ran into the 4 year old's room, threw her over my shoulder, ran back and grabbed my wife and started dragging her to the basement. I had the strength of 10 men. I'm screaming "Tornado, tornado!!!":eek::eek: and saving the family's life and my wife is yelling "It's a jet! It's a jet!" Huh? I finally hear her and it turns out it is the 11:30 Fed-X 727 buzzing our house. It rarely takes off this way, but since the winds were strong, they used the short south runway. My wife had rug burns and a sore wrist. The 4 year old never woke up. The baby my wife was pregnant with came out fine a few months later. :D

GORE FACES HILL GRILLING ON 'WARMING'; QUESTIONS AWAIT FORMER VP
Sun Mar 18 2007 20:23:00 ET

**Exclusive**

Temperatures are predicted to reach a high of only 43-degrees on Wednesday in Washington, but look for high-heat to come out of Al Gore's scheduled appearances on The Hill!

Gore is set to solo before Rep. John Dingell's [D-MI] all powerful Energy and Commerce Committee in the morning and Sen. Barbara Boxer's [D-CA] Environment and Public Works Committee in the afternoon.

Both are expected to have overflow seating, and protesters, both for and against Gore.

Gore will get a 30 minute opening and then Boxer and her republican counterpart, Sen. Inhofe, each get 15 minutes each of questioning in addition to their opening statements. Other senators will only get 5 min of Q & A.

"Democrat Dingell is a big global warming skeptic, so do not expect him to go too lightly on Gore," predicts a congressional source.

Proposed questions for Gore, which are circulating behind-the-scenes, have been obtained by the DRUDGE REPORT -- question that could lead Gore scrambling for answers!

Mr. Gore: You have said several times that we have 10 years to act to stave off global warming. Was that 10 years from the first time you said that or 10 years from now? We just wanted to get a firm date from you that we can hold you to.:D

Mr. Gore: How can you continue to claim that global warming on Earth is primarily caused by mankind when other planets (Mars, Jupiter and Pluto) with no confirmed life forms and certainly no man-made industrial greenhouse gas emissions also show signs of global warming? Wouldn’t it make more sense that the sun is responsible for warming since it is the common denominator?:D

Mr. Gore: Joseph Romm, the executive director for the Center for Energy and Climate Solutions, has said we must build 700 large nuclear plants to stave off climate change. Where do you stand on the need for nuclear energy?:D

Mr. Gore: Do you think the earth is significantly overpopulated and that is a major contributor to your view of climate change. (If yes, what do you think is a sustainable population for the planet?):D

Re: Global warming - another view

I want to thank you Hockeypuck for posting the link to the BBC Channel 4 program on Global Warming, the Great Swindle. I enjoyed watching it very much, and look forward to it being broadcast here in the States. :) .

I would love to hear the man's answers. Apparently there is a BBC documentary about global warming that the US networks have decided you don't need to see:
