Used in this context, I take it as complimentary-someone who is not afraid to do things, a "get 'r done" mentality.

DeepNdirt's next post shows a negative example.
This is one person that will never gain 'redneck' status.

Unless someone learns him to speel correctly..............

It's.............Git Er Done

If it weren't for spell-checker, everything I post would be spelled fonetiklee. I think I have the Archie Bunker mental defect.

Well yee haw y'all:laughing: Around here, the great white north, the term redneck doesn't mean you have to be from the south. If you live in the country own a 4x4 a tractor a shotgun a muzzleloader a 22 and a .30 cal, you're heading in the right direction. If you have a large garden and not only is your neck red but you have a tanned strip on your back between your pant line and where your shirt rides up when you're bent over weeding............. If you raise your own chickens for meat and eggs and have built yourself a whizbang chicken plucker and your chickens are truly so free range that the telephone man stops by to tell you that your chickens are on the road and you respond they have to get their grit somewhere, well........... If your freezers are full of cornish xs venison and pork, beans corn peas strawberries and raspberries that you have raised and processed yourself.......... If you understand the difference between a reflux column and a pot still and know that good liqour is 94+abv well........... you just may be a redneck. If there's a green patch hidden out somewhere on the back 40 You JUST MAYBE a MODERN REDNECK.
If you avoid the cities and seem a little xenophobic, well you could be a redneck or a prepper. I've been called a redneck and my response was, what's your point:laughing: I've been called a lot worse. If I want to rebuild a water pump for the well instead of buying a new one, well you get the point. If you have 2 of the same vehicles and one is for parts well:laughing: Seriously though after reading this thread, some of you take it all too seriously.
Lighten up life is short and if you can't laugh at yourself try taking that stick out of your whatever.
Short answer is I have been called a redneck, I take no offense because this is how I've chosen to live. If others think of me as a redneck, well what do I care. So yeah I just maybe a redneck and I'm **** proud of it.

This thread has been informative and funny, makes for good reading in the morning. One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that with our current "Political Correctness", Redneck and Hillbilly are about the only two supposedly derogative terms people can use anymore without fear of being called racist.
Here in my part of the Bluegrass, being so close to at least three metropolitan areas, it's OK to call someone a redneck or hillbilly if you know them, let a stranger call someone that and it doesn't take long before they get "educated"
My grandfather farmed his entire life, my Dad bought that farm and worked it most of his life, but he also took a little time out to get an engineering degree and retired from a major chemical company, but farming was always in his blood.
I grew up on that farm and couldn't wait until I got away from it. As soon as I graduated from high school, I enlisted in the Army as an easy way to get away from farming, but just before I retired, I bought my own farm and I've never regretted it. I also took the time while I was in the military to get a college degree, even though I've never worked in that field. There's a lot to be said from working with your hands, being out in the environment and seeing the fruit of your labors.
So, coming from laborers and being a laborer, having a farm along with the associated farmers tan in summer months, I guess I could be called a redneck. I don't have all my teeth, but that's because of an injury while in the service. I do drive a 4 wheel drive truck, they're nice to have on the farm, but mainly because I wanted the heavy suspension to haul my fifth wheel camper. I don't have a rifle hanging in the rear window, but I just might have a pistol in the console.
I've done a lot of things that would classify me as either a redneck or hillbilly or both, but as I said, as long as I'm called one of them by someone I know, it's nothing, but I don't like being called that by anyone else, because if it's not someone I know or someone that knows me, then they're using the term to classify me and if I reply to them in an attempt to classify them, then I'm being racist.
To me, it's a lot of fun for friends and family to tell redneck jokes, but for anyone else, the way they use it means a lot. Joking is fine, slurs aren't.

Bottom line, I'd call myself a redneck and I can find humor in the term and definitions. Life is too short to let your blood pressure go up over it, unless it's being directed at you in an attempt to demean you. Live and love friends, that's what it's all about
