Are you this old?

When I was in college in El Paso in the 60’s, we would pick up a radio station from Del Rio Texas that played the best music but their programming could be all over the place. In reality their transmitter was in Mexico and who know how many watts they broadcast.

But my best memory was their ad for “ Genuine autographed pictures of Jesus Christ”. Hmmm…

250,000 watts.

XERF

Wolfman Jack worked as a disc jockey from 1964 to 1966 for the (then) 250,000 watt radio station XERF (1570 AM) in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico, just across the river from Del Rio, Texas, which is among borders of Texas and Mexico.
Been to Del Rio a lot when I was trucking. Crossed the border several times to shop and have a meal. Margaritas were strong and if you could drink seven, the eighth one was free. My brother got a free one on one of his trips and spent three days in a motel and about died from alcohol poison. Other than that, some good memories.

Sometimes in the 50's, I remember reading that scrap metal was worth 1 cent per pound, while new machinery, car, tractor, etc. cost 1 dollar per pound.

I can still do fairly complex arithmetic calculations in my head, but I do them in unorthodox ways that most people do not understand when I try to explain it to them.

I'm the same way - never could memorize my "times tables" or flash cards. I do my math by remembering a few major single-digit multiplication results and counting on my fingers. I have a bachelor's in Industrial Technology and a Masters in Systems Management. 20 year career as a Naval Flight Officer and another 25 as an IT Project Manager. Hey - it works for me.

T=C + R*(T-A) + r*A + s*C + i*T
T=total cost
C=purchase cost (constant)
R=big tax bracket % (constant)
r=little tax bracket % (constant)
A=AGI head space in little tax bracket (constant)
s=sales tax %
i=projected ROI %
Eliminate i*T to get the withdrawal amount.
Interesting!

When a pack of Lucky Strikes jumped up to 25 cents, my grandpa swore he would quit if they ever got up to 35 cents. He never did quit.

Whoops. I guess I am really old. Because I remember when most people could make simple calculations like that in their head. I did say MOST not all.

My father spend quite some time teaching one of his cousins how to count back change to customers. She had married a fella that owned a grocery store and needed that skill right away. He said it was a nightmare getting her up to speed. He must have been successful as I can remember her counting out change to me when I was a kid and she was quite old. Yes the same old corner grocery at the intersection of the county line road and 39 highway that her husband had started all those years ago.

I can still do fairly complex arithmetic calculations in my head, but I do them in unorthodox ways that most people do not understand when I try to explain it to them.

I cannot recall if the gradations on the scale were only in full gallons or the fractions were also marked. If only gallons a lot of estimating would be needed.

That plus calculating the sales tax. Ours was 3% back in the 70’s, each additional penny kicked in at 12, 35, and 65 cents. And we had to count out the change in the customer’s hand Or get a butt chewing from dad.

Washington state back in the day had tokens to pay the tax so in addition to some change one also had carry some tokens. I don't rcall where one bought those tax tokens. Perhaps jusst got them in change with purchases? I think those tokens were still in use for bit after the War.
