it is amazing what kind of damage army worms do: i sprayed as much as i could at the time: but they have still put big brown spots all over the yard and pasture: they must taste really bad, i didn't see a single bird picking one up..come to think of it, i haven't seen to many birds lately?? no bluejays or mockingbirds???heehaw

I was noticing lately that the gaggle or herd or murder or whatever you call a big mess of bluejays that were in my back yard all summer seem to have moved on. I know there must have been 10-12 of the noisy buggers. Now I only see and hear one or two. I'm glad they're gone since they perch on the electric line coming to the house and make regular deposits on the chairs and table below, while they wait for me to leave after feeding the cat.

I don't think we've had army worms, but in my area the webworms are really bad this year. So far, we haven't seen any in our own trees, but if you drive around the neighborhood, you see them everywhere.

We have them around here too. I have a young oak tree that I was mowing around and my ROPS shook a branch, and ended up covered with young ones. Except, I didn't see any bags in this tree:confused:. I have a Bald Cypress at my mothers we planted 8yrs ago and it has the same worms invading it and that tree has the bag on the branch that they were on. We have since sprayed the trees and cut the branches, that were in bad shape, back.

Wacky, I have 2 live oaks, 4 bradford pear trees, and a large crepe myrtle and don't see any webworms here, but 2 or 3 blocks from here, some of the trees are covered with them. I don't know whether it's the different variety of trees or whether it's just that they haven't moved quite this far yet. When I was a kid, we'd get them in our plum trees and we'd stick a very stiff wire or steel rod in an old corncob, dip it in kerosene and light it and burn the webworms ouf of the trees. But a few years ago, living 60 miles south of Dallas, I sometimes had them in my pecan trees, hackberry trees, and plum trees and I just sprayed them with insecticide and got rid of them that way.

one morning last week i went out an there were thousands of army worms crawling across the blacktop on my drive: you couldn't step without stepping on one: so i grabbed the sprayer an mixed up 15 gallons of insecticide an reduced the number a bit: just not enough.

I can't imagine just spraying once will save the tree for life (like a life long vaccine), however I had bad problems with bagworms (or something like that) that was killing my pin oaks. I am NOT a green thumb and was a new homeowner at the time... so I didn't even notice the problem. (Even though half the leaves were gone!) Anyway, my neighbor told me about them and told me what to buy. Sprayed a couple of times and they were gone. Never came back during the next 10 years we lived there. I figured I would have had to spray every year.

It has been grass hoppers for us, yard has been full of them.

They have done allot of damage to my yearling Blackberries. War started when they got in the wife's roses, boy do they like rose leaves!

Haven't had to many bag worms this year, one or two nest show up and I burn them out with a small propane torch, though i wouldn't now since the vegetation is already pretty cooked.

It seems that, whether you take any action against them or not, some years webworms are plentiful and then other years, none or almost none. And the same applies to the grasshoppers.

In the 8 years ('94 to '02) that we lived in Navarro County, I think webworms were only a problem one year and grasshoppers two years.

Malathion is good, but I understand it does not last long after being mixed with water. My preferred insecticide was diazinon before it was so severely restricted.

I was hit with army worms about two weeks ago. I had already filled my sprayer with water, all I had to do was add the soluable Sevin and mix. I've been checking the pasture daily but they still took me by surprise. I concentrated on my hay field and surrounding pasture. They really like fertilized coastal bermuda. One pass with the Sevin and they were dropping right off.

10-4 I need to spray today...I found about 20 on the driveway between the garage and the seal for the door this morning. I spend to much time on the yard to have it taken over by those things. Funny be here 13 yrs and never had a problem before? This year I have seen very little beatles but have worms:confused:

i used some stuff i got at tractor supply, can't think of the name right now, its in a quart container, says 10% on the front: used to spray all sorts of things: for flies, ticks, fleas an you name it: also used in those automatic sprayers for flies an mosquitos: seems like it starts with a P?? i'll think of it shortly..having one of those brain freezes..it cost $15 for a quart at tractor supply, the local co-op has gone up to $19 for the same stuff: i use it to fog my barn with on occasion to keep the flies down: i think wettable seven is recommended for army worms, an i have some i bought a couple years ago, but i had some other things i had planned to do so didn't have time to mess with the seven: so i tried this stuff an it worked great: may not have much residual, but the worms don't have much residual either: they are usually gone in a day or two. PERITHINS, i know i am spelling that wrong: but you get the idea..its a pretty safe insecticide as insecticides go: used in food serving places in low doses:

Best thing for tent worms is ammonia. Put it in a spray bottle and wet the nest at dusk when they are all back.... in 5 min they are all dead and no chemical problems.
