WOW! This is the first time I saw this thread. Glad you were not hurt. Were you wearing the seat belt? Keeping someone else with you sounds like a good idea since freak accidents can happen anywhere, anytime.
And you may want to consider keeping a change of clothes with you also.

Robbie,geez........ Glad you got away unhurt. Sometimes a fraction of a second can be the difference between life and death. I'm not going to ask how it happend because I know all too well how fast things go wrong. After some more experience you will learn as your working if things feel a little unbalanced to "boom down" imediately. Its saved me several times from a roll over on various occassions. Another thing that has saved me from getting into trouble is "If you think you shouldn't be doing it chances are you shouldn't" In other words follow your first gut instinct. Also remember that under the wrong condtions you can turn any machine over even on dead level ground. Good luck and keep those tracks on the ground.

Sincerely,
DIRT

Robbie, you werent kidding, thats a good one, I just wish I had a camera when I did it. Mine was further over than that, and kept running the whole time. Ya, know its kind of hard to put a seat belt on when your face is glued to the windshield, huh. But hey, putting your machine in these situations to learn what they are capeable of is what makes you a better operator. You'll never make any money if you pus around all the time scared of the machine. When your scared of it, thats when they get the best of you. Keep grinding buddy, talk to ya soon

Robbie,

Just looked at this thread...thats really frightening man...I had a 3 inch diameter limb kick up when I was pushing some dirt with the bucket and come right through my front windshield and took out the Level Gauge..no damage other than the level gauge and a big scratch on the windshield but scared me pretty bad and took forever to get the windshield back into its groove...I have come close to over doing it with ours a few time tryin to use the cutter up a little too high and now that I have seen what can happen I will continue to think cautiously when in those situations...glad you made it out ok...I am about the same size as you and I was telling someone the other day that I doubted I could get out the back window of ours lol glad to know it IS possible after all ;)

Does anyone use a polycarbonate front door? Just having tempered glass up there doesn't make too much sense with a mulcher head.

We have a poly door on order after having the limb come through the stock door and seeing robbie's pics...when the limb came through on us it actually pushed the glass out of the door sill...didnt break it

Stock doors are poly in the frame of door like Uva said. The forestry door is a 1/2" poly window on the outside of the frame. I wanted a forestry door but I priced one and at 1200.00 I don't think so. I have ordered a 1/2" peice of plexi and will bolt onto the outside of the frame. Mine didn't break either just pushed in.

Robbie,

You are probably well aware of the difference between acrylic(plexiglas) and polycarbonate(lexan, etc).

But just in case...what one would want in a case like yours is NOT acrylic, but REALLY polycarbonate. Acrylic will crack (break/split in half) MUCH easier than polycarbonate.

Polycarbonate is about twice (or a little more) as expensive as acrylic, but well worth it when protection is needed.

Here is a link to a place that I have bought from in the past and use when I need to get an idea on what plastic should cost:

Hey Henro.

Let me ask you this then. Right now it's how the window is mounted not the material. It's factory and no other way to mount. The reason for plex is price and the individual who suggested it said a 1/2" peice of plexi would do the trick in his opinion. Do you think at that thickness it would work??? Thanks for the info. Robbie, I was wondering if either I/2 inch plexi or poly would have stopped that tree? Also How long do either last in the sun? I heard that they have to replace bullet proof windows pretty frequently.

Hey Chris. That's hard to say. To mount a thicker window it would have to be bolted to the outside of the door. My window is mounted inline with the door frame so no real resistance against material pushing in. My issues have come up with larger material hitting the window and pushing in out of the seal. Now a weak spot on ASV's in at the top of the door, where the headlights are that piece across the top is plastic. That is where the tree made it's most dramatic entrance. I plan to fab a piece of angle to mount over this section to protect the lights and against trees.

I've only had my tractor for a year and the door replaced once already from the wreck. So I'm not sure how long they would last. At the rate I'm going I'll have to replace before it wears out. I was planning on making my own window but after seeing how beefy a real forestry door is I think I may go that route. I like the added saftey.

Robbie
