At Home In The Woods

My FIL's smoker is a Brinkmann Gourmet Outdoor Cooker - Grill, Smoker, Steamer. It may be the same as this one ( Gourmet Charcoal Smoker & Grill (852-7080-0) | Brinkmann ) . It has a place on the bottom for charcoal. On top of the charcoal sits a pan of water. Above the water are two racks on which you place your meat.

Thanks. That sounds like what I would aim at, charcoal, fairly simple. Good to know you get tasty results with it.

Sounds like you could become the cat sitter if willing. I'm sure that would be best for the cat.

The new cat is a female; I hope she has been fixed. I think she may be on the older side based on the observation that she moves around at a slow walk most of the time. She definitely likes people and doesn't mind being around our daughter. She has shown the ability to be a little tempermental. A couple of times she acted like she might bite me; being familiar with cats I recognized the signs. I wonder if she may have bitten someone at her old home then got discarded.

Get her to the vet! They will be able to tell that she has been fixed, there will be a scar.

My wife put signs out on the nearby streets to see if we could locate the yellow cat's owner.

Yesterday we found the owner. A young guy recently moved into a house about a mile away. He went out of town for a few days and the cat disappeared. He's going out of town again this weekend so my wife offered to keep the cat until he gets back. I was getting attached to the cat.

Oh thats good, but i know yall wanted it as well.

My wife made a mock-up of our deck steps using concrete blocks and 2x's. I made a rough of sketch of the framing. We will have 2x's supporting the Trex composite deck boards every 12". Only one of the supports is shown in the sketch. The steps will be 5 feet wide. I've started cutting the framing boards using some scrap PT lumber we have lying around.

Vinyl siding is meant to leak and loose enough to let out any water that gets behind it. Especially if you have house wrap under the vinyl, don't worry about it. You could dab some caulk there before driving the screws if you really want to...
Dave,
Yes we have house wrap behind the vinyl siding. Are you saying that water that gets behind the vinyl siding will drain back to the outside instead of just running down the wall behind the siding?

I guess I could just drive the shutter screws through the vinyl and not worry about it. That's probably how it is done on 99% of all the vinyl sided houses out there. The engineer in me still hates to do it that way ...

Yes, vinyl siding is designed to breathe quite well. If you look up underneath you will see slots or holes in the lower edges for draining water. Anything that gets behind works it's way back out pretty quickly. Especially with house wrap behind it, you are in good shape as is. Just drill and go.

Make sure those steps have even riser heights to the finished floor level. The code on stairs is pretty picky and for good reason. If the heights are off more than 1/4" from one to the next, it can become a trip hazard. You wouldn't think that could possibly be true, but it is. Obviously the step off onto the ground will have some variation that is unavoidable, but make sure the rest of it is uniform.
