Those turkeys are looking for a good spot to nest. 1 got away with it and told the others "the coast is clear" :)

I would love to see that many turkeys on our place. I've only seen 1 wild turkey on our place and I don't believe we've ever drank any wild turkey here....:)

I tried out my new chainsaw today. WOW! Cutting through the oak logs is easily 3 times faster than using my old chainsaw. It almost feels like cheating.

I'm a orangaholic and bought my first Stihl 024 Super in 1984. I have 6 other Stihls and the 024 still gets worked on a regular basis. Chainsaw brand opinions run deep, but the bottom line is a pro saw in Stihl, Husky, Dolmar, etc will put a big smile on your face every time you fire it up.

Rick said a Stihl would put a smile on my face. He was definitely on the mark. I'm still smiling.

I'm sporting a new set of hearing protection earmuffs. As a bonus, the earmuffs are also headphones so you can attach them to an MP3 player or podcast player.

I brushed off some of the snow with a broom. The first log I cut has been lying on the ground for the past year. Based on Clemsonfor's comments about dirty bark dulling the chain, I used a hatched to clean off the dirty bark before cutting.

I used my measuring stick to identify 12", 15", and 18" spots on my bar. That way I can measure my wood lengths using the bar. My favorite length wood to burn in our fireplace is 15". However, longer pieces stack easier. Today I cut everything 18".

do you have a smoldering green wood fire, or a roaring fire?
clemsonfor,

Smoldering green wood fire of course.

This morning I did build a hot fire. It was 24 F outside when I first got up. The living room was 66 F. I heated the living room up to 72 F with the fireplace then kept it at the temp the rest of the day. We have been able to keep the house temps very consistent heating solely with the fireplace. The living room stays right at a steady 72 F. The kitchen, dining room/office, and office stay at about 70 F. The bedrooms and baths stay round 66 F during the day. On a cold night, the bedrooms and baths may get a little cooler.

very good choice of saw! by the way -- using regular motor oil- the stuff just flies off the bar and lets bar run a bit hotter.also it will run out quicker. the bar tip will just wear out and be loose after awhile. SO stay away from motor oil unless you are out of bar oil and need to cut another fuel tank worth and be done with it for the day.
You may want to watch those stihl you tube videos on sharpening . lots of good tips.
radioman,
I checked out the Stihl YouTube videos. Thanks for the tip. They were very useful.

I had a feeling that a good chainsaw would cut much better than my cheap saw. However, I didn't have any idea HOW much better. This saw makes my old saw seem like a toy.

In no time flat, I had that first log cut up and was rolling another log into position.

Here's my happy pose. My wife told me I looked like a geek in this pose. Doesn't matter. I'm a HAPPY geek.

Here's my stud-ly pose showing off my new chainsaw. My wife told me exactly how to stand in this picture so I wouldn't look so nerdy.

Does anybody have any comments about my wardrobe? My top shirt button is buttoned so that chainsaw chips don't go down my shirt.
