The astute observer will note that I chose a shirt that would blend in with the brick so as to appear invisible to the carpenter bees.

I have killed 14 carpenter bees with the tennis racquet since I've been working on the back porch. A carpenter bee in the garden stunk my little girl on the finger this week. The bee had made a hole in a stake in the garden.

That answers a question i had and others i know think the same. Do bumble bees/carpenter bees sting? I guess the answer is yes. I have never been sting and messed with quite a few and been close to the holes as well.

I always thought that carpenter bees would not sting. I read this on a Penn State web site http://ento.psu.edu/extension/factsheets/carpenter-bees
"The male bee is unable to sting. It is the male carpenter bee, which is most often noticed. They hover in the vicinity of the nest and will dart after any other flying insect that ventures into their territory. A common behavior of the males is to approach people if they move quickly or wave a hand in the air. The males may even hover a short distance from people causing unnecessary panic. The female however, is capable of stinging but seldom does. She must be extremely provoked (i.e. handled) before she will sting."

So it it the females that we have to watch out for.

Aint that the truth!!!

BUT remember once a honey bee stings... they die....
WASPS do not
Carpenter bees do not..
If the stinger goes in and you see "bee" guts, the bee dies...

I must qualify. We did not see the carpenter bee sting our little girl. However she told us "The bee sting me." The tip of her index finger was red and she had been messing around the wooden stake that had carpenter bees going in and out of a hole in the stake.

Regarding bumble bees, I can personally attest that they sting. When I was 9 years old, I was walking in a clover hay field on a windy day. The wind was blowing my T-shirt out away from my body like a balloon when I felt something inside the back of my shirt. I reached my hand inside my T-shirt and caught between my thumb and index finger a bumble bee. I happened to be grasping the bee on both sides of its abdomen and it couldn't sting me. I decided to be nice and let the bee go. Unfortunately, the ungrateful varmit stung my hand as soon as I turned loose of it then it flew off.

brin, it must be an optical illusion. I put a level on the rim joist and it's basically level. The deck slopes down away from the house a little. I told the framer to slope the deck slightly to facilitate water running away from the house and it appears to slope just like I wanted. The slope is not enough that you could tell visually without a level.

Yep it must just be the way it shows up on my screen...you sure are doing a good job and that was smart to have it fall slightly away from the door...I have see a few thresholds rot out because folks did not think to do that....

You sure have a beautiful little helper....She will grow up quick so enjoy her...

Obed, been following your thread for awhile now. I must say you have a beautiful place, The brick work is amazing. I have laid plenty of block foundations but never got into brick, too tedious. Reading about your adventures here on TBN has been entertaining, thanks for sharing.

brin, Our previous house had a rotten sill under the back door threshold. After several hundred dollars later, a person tends to remember such a thing.

Thanks for the compliment. I told someone we weren't going to teach her to brush her teeth in an effort to keep the boys away. He responded that she would just attract boys with rotten teeth. I guess a dad just can't win.

Right Radar...Watching...but as I remember Mr. Focker stressed Family to Ben Stiller and the Family Circle and then said Trust and made the motion with his two fingers from his eyes and then pointed toward Stiller...indicating he would be watching him...:)
