I dont think that you can define it by power plant. Yes deisel is the fuel of chioce at the moment, what will you call a machine that is made to pull loads when they are powered by a fuel cell?

If it was produced from cast assemblys, it is a tractor.

How about a machine with power, weight and traction capabilities far in excess of what is required to transport itself. Its main intent is to transport and operate agriculture or construction equipment whether self powered or powered by systems provided for on the tractor.
Please note that no mention of size should be part of this description.

Works for me, or should I say my tractor. My tractor knows it is a tractor. It found out the day it followed the lawn mower around the yard but took out the trees it kept hitting instead of jolting the operator out of his seat .

In my opinion, if it has a built-in, non-removable lawn mower, it is a "riding lawn mower". If the lawn mower is a removable attachment, it is a "tractor".
