I have a Ford F350 Diesel, and have been putting Automatic Transmission Fluid in the fuel since I got it. Does anyone do this also to their tractor. I am still getting used to my new B2910, and do not want to screw it up. Looked through the manual and did not find anything against this practice, but did not find a recommendation either. Any help would be appreciated.....Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I have heard of others doing this but I have a question.

I am confused, you put tranny fluid in the fuel on a 30-40 thousand dollar truck against the manufacturers instructions ( I think they only suggest Stanadyne additive?) and your worried about putting it in a much less expensive tractor? I would think the much more complex diesel on the Ford F350 (what year?) would be the one that MIGHT suffer ill effects. ( if anything would)

As far as them not mentioning to put it in I don't think that means it's OK. They don't mention Budweiser either /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What is it supposed to do? I would not put anything in an engine that the MFG did not rcommend.

I use the Kubota fuel additive. It does not cost all that much at one quart per 100 gallons of fuel. It keeps the fuel from gelling and if there is a warranty problem it won't get in the way of a settlement.

Some people feel the reduced suphur content [ sulpur helps lubricate ] of todays fuel will lead to premature injection pump failure.

I have also hear of some people putting two cycle oil in with their fuel to alleviate this purported problem.

Me, I don't know, but do add commercial fuel conditioner.

Think I'd keep the auto fluid [ Note; its not the same product now as it was years ago ] for the transmission.

Well first off you must have a pre-Powerstroke if you add ATF to fuel. You would cause a lot of injector wear if you had a F-350 Powerstroke.

Next, as far as adding ATF it serves no added benefit and the EPA would go nuts. The myth was that it added lube to injectors/pump but that is from the 80's? No need to add now and the fuel now is clean and low sulfur. Surlur is good for pump etc but bad for enviroment. If anything I would only add "Power Service" to lower the gell point and add some lube to fuel.

Lastly, you really do not need to add anything to fuel if you buy good clean fuel.

Mike: Do you have any expertise on the Powerstroke? I just bought a late 1996 4wd,very clean inside and out and would like some pointers-

I know of a website that has all the expertise you can absorb..
thedieselstop.com... GREAT SITE!

grainger12002 - Yes I had a Powerstroke for 5 years traded it in for a new Lexus. Nice truck and had some serious power. Needed something shorter to the ground because my rottie could not jump that high (tore ACL in hipe, like most rotties) /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

RCannon - I have heard of that and the admin of the site Jason L is a real a'hole! I would not truck him for anything.

grainger12002 --These are things I did or had the keep eye on.

Front wheel bearings needed grease every 25,000. I guess because of heavy front end.

Change Fuel filter (w gasket) every 10,000 miles. Cheap from DIS ($11 each and it is the SAME filter as Ford's $44)

Drain fuel filter about every month to keep water out. If it gets in there....

Front ball joints sucked!

Went though (3) glow Plug Relay's in 5 years.

Keep an eye on Hoses and rubbing.

Do no keep Heater pluged in all night if you want to keep it warm. It is a 1000watt heater. Get a timer.

Use a nice synthetic tranny fluid in the E40D. I used Amsoil and it did shirt better and the fluid did not smell burnt after 20K miles.

Also put a nice oil in the rear end and torque conv.

***Try to buy parts at International. They make the Ford Powerstroke parts for the old powerstroke.
