Cowboydoc,

I suspect the diets aren't really that much different. They're both basically high protein low carb. I think the one the wife has found may be a little more lenient. It does set calorie limits though, so it's not an "eat-all-you-want" plan.

I was surprised to find that the ketosis strips are available from Walmart. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I think I would have been a lot better off, but the nicotine addiction gave way to a tootsie roll addiction. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Honestly, your 6'-1" frame carrying 200 lbs. doesn't sound 20 lbs. overweight to me. My son is 6'-5" and weighs in around 230-235 lbs. and looks and is in great shape. I guess a lot depends on your overall build.

Nonetheless, if you do want to lose the 20 lbs., I'd think a simple reduction in portion sizes and eliminating desserts and alcohol would probably do the trick for you. It doesn't seem to me like that (relatively) small goal would warrant a full scale dive into a programmed regimen. Besides that, if you don't get on something regimented like that you don't have something off of which you can fall.

Good luck with whatever you decide. I hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I would trade, 6'1" 200lbs. Im 6'1" and around 250. I have tried the atkins diet and did well for the first two weeks, lost 15 lbs and then got sick. Not from the atkins I am sure, but from a flu that pretty much put me out for three weeks now. I have gained it all back eating and trying to get my strength back.

Got to get on the diet now that I am better again.

I heard Dr Dean say that every diet ever created works, i.e., you lose weight, assuming you follow the diet /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. The issue is keeping the weight off. To do this you have to change habits. Exercise habits and eating habits.

I started my diet the week before Thanksgiving and have lost 44 pounds. How? I eat fewer calories than I burn. No diet plan. I use a program on my Palm where I enter the foods I eat and track my calories. It's amazing how many calories you can consume at times other than at traditional meal times. Walk past the candy jar and grab a handful of M and Ms, have a donut in the morning, someone at the office brings in cookies, stand and pick at the lovely Easter ham before you sit down and eat, snack on a bag of chips while watching TV, attend a conference and they supply free cookies in the afternoon, etc. It only takes a few calorie dense snacks and you're over 2,000 calories/day fast.

The program also helps you estimate your resting metabolism rate, i.e., how many calories you burn, based upon your weight, activity level, exercise, etc. Eat fewer calories than you burn, you lose weight. Many of us eat, not because we're hungry, but because it's noon and we eat lunch at noon. We eat a snack at 9:00 PM because that's what we did when we were a kid.

My goal is to hit the weight that will put me at my proper BMI, so I have 6 more pounds to go.

That's great Mike. Congratulations!

My problem is I like to eat and I'm a good cook. I tried slimfast & leancuisine. Lost 30#. Gained 20 back in a year after I quit. (Probably due to the starvation reaction lowering my metabolism) I guess it's good that I'm net down 10.

Current "regular" exercise consists of two 20 minute walks a day with the pups. Trying to make some time for a little higher energy regular exercise. Should be easier as the weather is finally getting warmer. Never been one to work out in a gym. Occasional exercise includes skiing, kayaking, biking, swimming. Nothing is a routine (yet).

Mike,

Everything sounds great in your diet. Only thing I would recommend is that you go by your bodyfat and not by BMI. BMI is extremely overrated in reference to true health.

How do I determine body fat?

You need to get probed /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. Actually it is measured using a device that sends an electrical current thru you. health check systems shows a bunch of different tools, from scales to "fat calipers"
