When our Dollar store first opened up, it was clean, and everything was in its proper place.

Six months later it was dirty, isles blocked with stuff not put away yet and tired grumpy employees. Just like all the rest of the Dollar stores.

Reminds me of the call I made to my local insurance agent. I dialed the regular number, and knew I wasn't going to be happy about this call, as the name was changed, as they had been acquired by a large insurance agency called EPIC, but the recording assured me the I would receive the same personal service from the same local people. But, it took navigating through three levels of menus to finally get to talk to a human, instead of a human answering the phone and connecting me to my agent. When I did get connected, she was using a speaker phone or something, and I finally had to tell her to pick up the phone so I could understand her with out the horrible acoustics, was like talking through a pipe.
I asked what the cost would be to insure an '17, '18 or '19 Tahoe compared to what my car and pickup cost now. The Tahoe would fill in for both the car and truck, and be one less vehicle to insure, plate and maintain. So then we have to go through verifying all the info on all my present vehicles, four of them, then she needs the VIN of the vehicle I may be adding, which I don't have, as I'm just looking at Tahoes, and asking a dozen more questions. After five minutes of clacking on the keyboard she finally says my new premium would be so much, and I'm presently paying ~$300 more than that.
I've been insured there since the 70s, but it looks like I'm going to look for a new agent, as there are a few small ones still around.

I live outside a small college town. I deal with a locally owned grocery store. They are always the nicest folks to deal with.

Today, poor service is the expected service.
(y) Self service registers don’t even have cell phones. Some in-store management (advance auto) don’t have any sway with store operations. They are just the person with door keys and deposit authority.

I routinely make calls for customer service knowing I am talking to someone working from home in a far away counrty. I can hear chickens clucking, roosters, goats. 😂

I like it when you give them your name and they call you “Mr. (first name)” and you have no idea how to pronounce their name.

Not necessarily all that much better for U.S.-based support. Often as not it's a WFH position, and you hear kids yelling or dogs barking in the background. Likewise, you'll often get someone whose first language is Ebonics, has a really heavy hard-to-understand regional accent or just sounds like they're talking with their mouth full.
Admittedly, it's a crummy job that probably doesn't pay very well, so you're not getting top-tier applicants. It's a treat when you get someone who's actually helpful and you can understand.

I can DEFINITELY remember those companies that have service technicians that speak understandable English.

Otherwise - might just as well send an e-mail to the service dept listed on the web site.

For a while I though my hearing was going bad. But, no, an audiologist said my hearing was just fine for a person my age. No hearing aides required.

Don't know about that liquor store's situation but when unemployment is this low, sometimes hiring the unqualified is better than nothing. It probably gives some of the reluctant hires a chance to get experience and life skills. But yeah, some hires just need a place to hang out until they win their lottery.
