I know 2 people that are on the Atkins diet........It seems to work well for them, but I have heard pro's and cons,is it a unhealthy way to lose weight ?I have thought about trying it,I am about 20 lbs above what I like to be,I am 6"1' 200. I was told it would help lower cholestrol.
Thanks

I was on the Atkins diet about a year and a half ago and lost thirty five pounds in four months. I fell off the wagon during the Holidays at the end of the year and never got back on. The important thing to remember about this diet is to make sure you take vitamin suppliments to make up for what you are missing in the foods that you cannot eat. The best thing about the diet for me is that I did not have to go hungry. I ate all I wanted as long as it was within the diet plan. The downside was that my wife complained it was expensive buying meat and cheese all the time and that she had to prepare meals around what I was allowed to have, which meant a lot of the food she enjoyed was not included as often. I want and need to get back on the diet again but my weak will power is denying me because I will have to give up beer and sweets. Once on the diet the craving or desires for forbidden foods and beverages goes away.... it is the initial weaning off the "good" stuff that is tough for me!

You have to look at this diet not as a temporary fix but more of a permanent change in your lifestyle. Just like any other diet, if you do not stay on it you will not keep the weight off. I am living proof of that! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The Adkins diet is ok to go on for short term. You need a more balanced approach though. For men over 30 and esp. men in their 40's and 50's the best plan out there is called the gladiator diet. You can read more about it and get on their website at www.gladiatordiet.com. Remember diet is only half of the story as well. You must be on a good exercise program as well. Most people don't want to hear this. But just eating well is not enough for most people. At a very minimum you need 30 minutes of cardiovascular work three times a week, more if you are wanting to lose weight. You also should be on a strength conditioning program twice a week. There is so much more to this than just eating right. You body fat percentage plays a huge role in your health. You can have two people both 5'10. One weighs 165 and has 20% bodyfat. The other one weighs 205 and has 15% bodyfat. The man that has 15% bodyfat is healthier as a general rule.

The timing of when you eat, how much you eat at one time, etc. etc. has a great deal to do with it. The one guy said he could eat all he wanted. Well from the standpoint of the diet yes. But from the standpoint of health absolutely not. Probably the biggest injustice we do to our bodies is overeating. Our bodies are extremely efficient at using the energy that our bodies need. However when we have to convert extra food to storage it is incredibly taxing and unhealthy on the body. Diet, exercise, etc. aside the biggest health benefit you can do for your body is to eat smaller portions of food. It takes 20 minutes for your brain to tell your stomach that you are full. We all eat very quickly and by the time we realize we ate too much it's too late.

Another important aspect is your metabolism. This is where exercise comes in. It takes 6-10 times as long to set your BMR, basal metabolic rate up as it does for it to come down. This is reset by 2 factors but only one causes it to go up and that is exercise. Increased food intake does not cause it to go up but decreased food intake below your BMR does cause it to go down extremely rapidly. That is why crash diets don't work. You go on a crash diet. The body responds very quickly and lowers your BMR. You lose a few pounds and then go off of the diet and gain it all back and more. The reason you gained it all back is because now instead of needing 2500 cal./day your BMR has reset to 1500 cal/day. Now when you go back to eating normally your BMR does not reset to 2500/day. It stays at 1500 cal/day. It will gradually start to rise slowly but never to the original number UNLESS you do exercise. Exercise will reset the BMR to a higher number.

All in all weight loss is complicated. There is no simple answer and there is no miracle diet. It's a combination of eating right and exercising, NOT FOR A COUPLE MONTHS, but for life. It's really a lifestyle choice and not a diet. No diet works only lifestyle changes work.

Doc,

Any "plans" you recommend for men under 30? I need to shed some pounds myself...

As always, we greatly appreciate your advice (tractor, farming & medical).

One thing I forgot to add as well. If you're looking for health most people work out too hard. For weight loss you want to exercise around the 60% MHR. If you exercise above this you will build cardiovascular fitness but you won't lose weight. Taxing the body too much will also lead to a BMR drop if you don't have sufficient calories to sustain where you are working out at. This will also cause the body to go into a starvation mode.

Same as above. It just gets more critical the older we get.
Start right now following a diet similiar to the gladiator diet. Do cardiovascular work 3-5x/week for 30-40 minutes. Work out with weight for 20 -30 minutes 2 - 3x/week and you will be in great shape. Personally I workout at 65% of my MHR for cardiovascular. I follow that 30 minutes with 30 minutes of weight lifting. I don't lift heavy, THAT IS THE KEY. Use proper form and you can lift half the weight and get the same benefits without the wear and tear to your joints. Powerlifting and bodybuilding are a sure way to ensure that you will have osteo and degenerative arthitis when you get older. The key is moderation!!! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

There are several diets that are similar to Atkins. My wife has one (from the gym) that she started two weeks ago. It allows a few carbs everyday as opposed to none. It handles the metabolism swing Doc mentions by shifting around somehow (I'm not the expert on it). She uses Ketosis (sp?) strips to determine when the diet is no longer working (plateau), at which point she will shift her eating patterns for a period of time and then go back to the initial 2 week 20 carb per day intake. This is supposed to reset the metabolism rate. (If I understand it right.) After the first 2 weeks, shes dropped 8 pounds. Not a super fast loss, but something. The diet is now telling her to expect 1 to 2 pounds per week.

If it continues to work good for her, I may give it a try myself. I just don't know if I can stand 2 weeks with only 20 carbs daily and only 60 after the 2 weeks. We both quit smoking about a year ago and really gained. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

There is/was a native population [tuharmara Spelling ] living in the Copper Canyon area of Mexico. Their diet consited almost wholly of corn and beans. They had one sport which involved running for long distances. Usually the whole village would runn along with the competetors. This game could cover several hundred miles.

Unverified useless knowledge.

Yes you're exactly right you need to keep checking ketosis. It mentions this in detail in the Adkins book.
