I have a problem goat.

It has been testing the 6" square field fence and has discovered that if it pushes the bottom of the fence up in a low spot, it can wiggle its way under the fence on its belly. I have several low spots along the perimeter of the pasture, so it would be a big job to fill them all in.

The goat also has an intermittent issue with putting its face and horns through the fence so it can eat grass on the other side, and then not being able to get its horns back through so I have to "help" it get out about once every 1-2 months.

I tipped the goat's horns several years ago, so now they are about 10 inches long and curved backwards.

My idea is to connect a forward facing "hook" to each horn so that whether he tries to slide under the fence or even if he tries to stick his head through the 6 inch holes in the fence, the forward facing hooks will catch on the wire and stop him.

I was going to slide a 1 inch PVC pipe over the top 4 inches of each horn and then put a 90 degree fitting and another short pipe facing forward, but the horns have an oval shape in cross section so the pipe won't fit very snugly. Any ideas?

I would use a low electrified wire, but the horse shares this pasture (he and the goat are friends) and I am afraid he will step on the wire and get tangled).

We had a doe deer that would lift chain link fence up this way but the only low spot led into a divider so she didn't get out, only in where the grass was taller (she was happy there). Anyway, what we did is just cut a small diameter tree (you can use store bought wood if you want) and anchored the wire to the tree along the bottom. Now the doe can't raise the wire as the log ran post to post. We only had a couple spots to deal with but it is a lot easier then trying to fill low spots and creating little ponds if you only fill the fence line.

I'd run that electric wire.. We have ankle high electric around our pasture with horses... they get buzzed exactly -1- time then they stay about 10' away from the fence..

Theres a reason its testing and most of the time its about food or boredom. OTOH if its about sex no man-made restraint will work. Instead of messing w/ the fence perhaps solving the basic issue would be better in the long run?

I had a goat that would stick it's head through the fence and get stuck about 3-4 times a week. I took a 12 piece of PVC, I guess it was 3/4 or 1" diameter and duct taped it across it's horns about half way up it's horns. That will stop it from sticking it's head through the fence. Might keep it from going under.

Sounds like a hassle to me.
If I had a goat that presented that much trouble, I guess I'd just eat him.:)

Dehorning will solve the problem of getting caught in the fence, going under can be solved with the electric wire. If it fails I do know that a good bbq will work!;)

We had a goat that would challenge me like this all the time. What worked for me was to tie her to a cinder block. That way, when she jumped the fence, I found her on the other side:)
