Just a question. I have two spots on my roof with shingles blown off by last weeks windstorm (65-mph gusts). How to I attach the tarps over the bare spots? Unless told of a better way I intend to nail them to the roof. There are so many people with damage that I don't know when the roofers will get here to fix the problem. I really don't want to nail them as I will then have more to repair. But............

Any Ideas?

how old is your roof? ... most likely it need to get redone if you lost patches with these wind... how many nails was in each shingles can you tell ?

Since you don't know when it will get fix, I would buy some ice and water tuck it in under the last good row and staple it in place. Ice and water also have a sticky side so it will glue in place... If you want to go with a tarp I would use staple as well ... a lot of them and it will have to go over the peek of the roof or under a intact row so the water flow on top of the tarp and not under it.

If the roof needs to be replaced anyway, a roll of flatroofing with liberal application of Henry's roofing cement under it, nail or staple under a good row of shingles like Rock said, & weight it down until the henry's sets. It won't be pretty, but it'll last until you get a roofer to do the whole roof right.

If you can and don't mind post a picture of a shingle that flew off.

Nail a few wood perlins on top of the tarp (1x4's).

In addition to using the wood either 1x4, 1x3 or 2x4's if you wrap the edges of the tarp around the wood then nail it down it will withstand the wind better.

1x4 wood planks is a good idea just need to nails them on a angle (like this ^) so water flow off the planks and don't accumulate and sip under and don't put any at the bottom, top and maybe side... just use staple for the bottom...

Or you could fold the tarp over, then under the bottom one. It would still shed most water over the board, and wind won't be able to pick it up.

You could even bevel the upward edge if you were concerned about any water buildup.

That would ruin vinyl siding, in my case.

Oh most diffidently, I was only showing the picture on how to wrap the trap around the board to help minimize the wind damage from tearing the tarp.

Second layer ?? so shingles on top of shingles ... when new shingles are installed on top of existing shingles the nails need to be longer at least 2 inch if not that what happen... the good news is they did their time, they started to curls on the one side.

If you put down roll roof or anything else that will cover the damage, you'll want to make pictures first so your adjuster can see photos of the damage.

If the damage is near the peak, you can roll some of the tarp around a 1x4 or 2x4, screw or nail it down on the opposite side, and then fold the tarp back on the damaged side which means the tarp will cover the screws. Then secure the bottom either with screws/nails as others have suggested. Or tie off with rope if you have something to secure a rope.

A little more info. This is a new roof installed in the fall last year. I was worried that we hadn't had any hot weather after the install to seal the shingles. But with gusts up to 65+mph don't guess it would have mattered much. Roofer's wife called after I posted the original. Said to use wood strips as in the picture somebody posted above. Also said that I was the fifteenth that had called this morning. Shingles are off in two spots near the top of the roof. I will place tarps over the peak with wood strips at the top and down both sides. Hopefully roofers will be here before rain comes late Wednesday.

And this will be a cash job. Not enough damage to meet my insurance deductible. Only two spaces that will be covered by a couple 6'x8' tarps. Maybe a dozen shingles all together.

Update on the update. Just checked the weather app on my phone, the one that is most accurate. They have moved the forecast rain back to Thursday. So I am going to wait about putting more holes in the roof until later in the week. Since they installed the roof the roofer said we would be one of the first they got. I really like the guy that owns the business. He was the straightest talking of any that gave an estimate. Went into detail about the brand of shingle that he used and why he didn't use other brands. And the all Mexican crew that installed the roof was the hardest working and happiest bunch I've ever seen. All the time they were working one of the wives was cleaning up around the house. Only complaint I could have made was the loud Spanish language country music they played all day. Neighbors thought it was hilarious.

And somebody asked for pictures of the blown off shingles. A picture of the roof would be more telling with pieces of the shingles about an inch square still nailed down but the rest of the shingle missing. I have no complaints about the job the roofers did.

Sounds like a good plan to wait if no rain is predicted in the next few days.

Hope your roofer can get to you soon.

No worries, I was only curious on the placement of the nails and how many nails per strip because some shingle you only have 1/2 inch slot to put the nails in if not they don't hold and some people cheep out on nails I have soo that too often... It is true that if they got installed and you haven't got hot weather since they don't hold as much...

Yeah, the failure was probably due to installation. The roofer probably saved $20 on nails. I know that the roof was put on at least 20 years ago, so they did the job.

I was told that if the roof deck is OSB, the nails have to be able to penetrate though the OSB to hold sufficiently (sp?). Never had anyone in the industry confirm that statement. And yes I had a shingle roof installed in mid November in northern Michigan on the windward side dormer that did not seal down. I had shingles coming off that first winter and for years later. Jon
