I called a local rental agency that rents out tractors with various 3PH implements to see if they would rent me just the implements. They would, and at what I think are great prices!

For example: Tiller for $55/day, post hole digger for $35/day - and, they have a JD 7A backhoe that will fit my tractor (JD 4210) for $45/day.

This sounded great to me. I was thinking about buying a tiller, but I will only use it about twice a year. At these rental prices, I can't justify buying, obviously.

Anybody else rent attachments instead of buy?

Andy,

I think you've got the right idea. I cannot possibly justify a backhoe (big $$$) but would love to rent one. If I didn't already have a tiller (came with the tractor) I would rent it for the two times a year it might be needed. I wish I could find someone local to rent me a post hole digger since I would love to see if it would actually work around my place.

Yes, every chance I get and when I need them. A drawback is wanting an attachment just when someone else wants it, or finding out that the last person that rented it decided to buy it. So it isn't available to you until they replace it with another. My rental place applies the rent towards the purchase.

Repair of rental attachments is not covered by my insurance, but maybe is yours.

Seems to me it would be a great business opportunity. So many people have compact tractors these days, and since Cat 1 3PH is standard, the stuff would fit just about anyone's tractor.

I did call around, and this one place is the only one I found. Seems like there's some bucks to be made...

Hi Andy--Dont forget, most of these type ventures figure in a minimum $2-3 million blanket liability insurance policy that will be a must have, before they open the doors--Lots of personal injury risk associated with this type business--Ken Sweet

Plus, maintenence gets expensive. Some few folks aren't all that careful with stuff they rent - the wear seems to add up quicker.

AndyNY,
Before you get your heart set on renting a JD 7 backhoe for your JD 4210, remember that you need a power beyond kit, a dual SCV, backhoe mounting plates and a folding ROPS in order to use a backhoe and I believe for a 4000 series tractor you need a JD 47 backhoe, the 7 is for a JD 790.

Bill,

Yup, I kinds figured it would not be that easy. I do have the folding ROPS.

The rental place has it on a 4310, so I think it would work in that respect.

Im mostly real happy about the tiller and the post hole digger. They also have a york rake.

AndyNY,
I have the JD 47 Backhoe on my 4200. It is a sweet piece of machinery and it can either be installed or taken off in less than 5 minutes. It sure beats a shovel and is highly recommended as your next target. If you haven't taken delivery yet, as per your profile, it might be worthwhile to see if your dealer would cut you a deal on the power beyond kit, the backhoe plates and anything else you need. Then you could rent or buy when it is convenient.

Or rent a tractor that has the backhoe on it. Shouldn't cost too awfully much more than just the backhoe rental would. But I really like having my own backhoe and would highly recommend it as an implement. Good suggestion to see if you can work something with your dealer now...
