For the past 2 months neighbors that are 2 farms away have been riding what sounds like ATVs and dirt bikes. I can't see over there since there's woods and vegetation blocking the view. The ATV noise is really loud and annoying and I can't imagine it's a stock muffler. What would make the ATV this loud?
Is there such a thing as a racing muffler that would be this loud?

2 farms away, with woods and vegetation in the way?. even without a muffler, I can't imagine it being that loud at your farm!.. you might be able to see something either from the front, or back of the farm, though!.. btw, you might have noise ordinances where you are, this would be unnecessary noise, which would be not allowed 24 hours a day.. unlike necessary noises, which have hours of use..

yes, there are several companies that make "racing" exhausts. Some are fairly loud but some of the top brands are not a lot louder than stock. There is a chance they hollowed out the stock exhaust and are running that. If they didn't rejet the bike properly it won't last too long at least.... LOL

Trust me, it's loud. We are on 22 acres. Farm next to me is 32 acres. The noise is coming from the other side of that farm.

Often it is just the way the sounds travels. We have a place they are working with a dozer well over 1.5 miles from my place but some evenings you can hear the backup beeper on the dozer like it is 100 years away - weird but somehow the hills channel the sound over to our place.
A lot of people like these loud exhausts. Personally the quieter it is the better, I would love to drop the noise down a bit more on my SxS!

4 stroke MX bikes and ATVs are LOUD. The noise carries much farther than 2 stroke engines

Trail bikes aren’t as loud but they are still much louder than the smokers. I bet they are riding MX bikes on a track

talk to the 32 ac farm - find out if it annoys them - you guys can then go talk to the loud guy

That's the plan. I'm trying to get all the info I can ahead of time before approaching them.

the loud guy would say take a hike, then what??.. that's why he should check the noise ordinances!..

I've checked with the township zoning officer in the past and was told we don't have any noise ordinances nor are there plans to do. We don't have a local police force and use the State Police instead (they told us it's a local issue), however, Pennsylvania does have a statute addressing ATV noise which may help if we persist. There are at least 3 other neighbors who would probably join in the complaint.

They sometimes come past our road on a SUNDAY, a convoy of all types of UTVs and those things with the Bycycle seat and handlebars. Sounds like Patons Third Army Approaching.

Not saying it bothers me, but yes, why do these things have to be so loud from the factory?

You know, being in the country I think that is just part of living "out here". Sometimes it's gunshots at a home made range, Loud stereo, chainsaw operation, redneck neighbor working on his circle track car...the list goes on. Be happy you have few rules to bind you to the real world.

Now if they are operating it at 5am and then again at 10pm at night I would think some respect should go a long ways unless they are just complete tools.

Good luck.

This is when a small drone really comes in handy.

All the neighbors around here have quads. Yes they are noisy. It bothers my wife but I don't even hear it if I'm working. I guess I'm lucky. I can't hear my wife either after a while. :) Just learn to ignore the noise. It makes life a lot simpler.

My last name is Peters so PMS stands for Peters Mechanical Services. The pmsmechanic is just to tempt people to think that I'm weird.

Being weird or crazy is a good policy. Keep people guessing.
