I tried AVG a couple years ago. I don't like. Shortly after installing it (two days actually), it let a nasty trojan/homepage hijacker slip through. That created a huge headache. I don't think I could ever try AVG again. My current Nortan AV has expired back in August. I am thinking that when it does get old, I will remove it and try Avast. I've heard good things about it. There is also another free AV program out there called AntiVir. I have heard good things about that one, too.

i guess beauty is the eyes of the beholder... I've run (and paid for) Norton's
since I went online back in 2001. Last winter i got a call from my father saying "Resend your last e-mail... I accidently deleted it."
OOPS, I hadn't written him in months.

after updating my VP (which I do every Wednesday anyhow) I ran a complete scan; nothing showed up. I then contacted tech support at my ISP; they referred me to AVG, which I downloaded and quickly found the worm. After quarantining it I suddenly got a message from my Norton's saying 'Surprise, you have a virus!"

Suffice to say, after calling all my former clients from when I was self-employed and telling them "If you get an E-mail from me, DON'T open it!!!!"
I appreciate my free AVG much more than my Norton's, which i pay for.

Norton used to be a good program but I think they've gone down the tubes. It's "bloatware" now and it's a major resource hog. It slows your system down and it can't detect viruses. Plus it ain't free. Go figure.

My PC technical knowledge is moderate at best, but I have owned and used PCs since the early Ataris (early '80s) and have been online since just before Al Gore invented the internet (my first online account was early '94). We currently have 5 PCs in use here, all of which have internet access, two of which spend essentially 24/7 online. After struggling last year with both of those units in terms of operating speed and online speed, I sent the oldest one to the tech we use for a complete bench test and any necessary upgrades. His verdict....Symantec owned the majority of resources on my PC. In one fell swoop we changed all the PCs over to Zone Alarm, AVG, and a spyware whose name I don't wish to disclose, removing all vestiges of Norton/Symantec from each PC. The difference was immediately obvious. Seriously....so obvious that I was astonished. Certainly there are probably otrher products that do the same job, but I know these work, and they have been very good for us.

I gave up on Norton a couple of years ago after repeated problems with thier horrible 'LiveUpdate' non-feature. I've been using NOD32 (free) since then with no ill effects.

Norton was nothing but problems with no results. I remember it being the best thing out there 7 or 8 years ago, but now it seems to be living on it's history and not actualy being able to accomplish anything. The last time our computer crashed, I took it in to a local computer repair store and was told that AVG was about the best thing out there. We've been using it for a year now and so far, so good.

I gave up on norton also, have been using AVG for about 8 mo. now and like it! Getting rid of Norton was pain had to follow their directions exactly, and i bet there is still some of it left:mad:

I'm in the habit of rebuilding/reinstalling my PC's every year. Seems like a good way to get rid of clutter so I think I dumped Norton before one of those.

Add me to the list of those that dumped Norton. I hope I made the right decision. I am going to give AVG another try. If I make it past two days without an infection I think I will keep it. :D Anyway, I do like how it doesn't use as much resources as NAV2004 did.

Maybe I'm reading something wrong, but I understood that AVG 7.1 Free Edition will no longer be available after January 15.

However, I just upgraded to AVG Free Edition 7.5, not AVG Anti-Virus Professional Edition 7.5

Did I miss something or do I need to do something else?

You are right. It is just 7.1 that will no longer be available. After I read this thread I went to Grisoft's website and checked out the forums. There are numerous questions about it. AVG will still be free.

carfull installing avast ontop of a machine with some other antivirus already on that.

I provide the puters and tech support for my parents. I specificly have the anti-virus stuff setup to be non-mess-it-up (aka invisiable) etc.

one of there friends (self proclamed computer peep) decided that because he didnt see any antivirus softwere running (no little icons down in the bottom, brilliant i know) he would go ahead and install it.

which proceeded in halting the bootup of the machine.

so i got to spend 45 min talking my mom through how to boot to safe mode and uninstall the crap so the machine would work again.

needless to say she was not happy and neither was i.
