I really don't know. Tractors aren't made in model years, all we care about its the hours. If I had to guess I think its like an 05. It was a contractors machine who bought too small. They bent the backhoe boom somehow and quickly decided to upgrade. We installed a brand new boom on it and now its ready to go again.

MESSICK:

Check the date stamps on the wheels for the sale year. Chances are
yours is a very late model, with a serial number over 60000.

As for the B21 vs. B26, I have only heard two things better about the
former: better hood armor and lower price. That B26 is slick.

Hey guys. Speaking of the B21, I am looking to buy one. I live in Rochester, NY and would prefer to buy one out of state. I am going to build a new home and want to do the basement digging myself. I wanted to buy a used B21 from ebay buy my wife does not trust spending $15,000 on something I have not seen in person. Therefore, the next expensive option is to get a new one from a dealer out of state. One local dealer said that Kubota is not making the B21s anymore so he does not have one in stock. He does have a B26 but I think it might be too big. Is the B26 & B21 about the same physical size? I know it is stronger. Would it be about the same price as a B21? I found a new 2007 left-over in Georgia. But that is way too far to drive to save a thousand or so. I was also thinking of the new BX24 but I think that is too small for what I plan on doing with it. Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Mike

The B26 is definately stronger, but in my opinion its the same size class as a B21. Tires are about the same size etc. In other words if someone says a B21 is on the small side for a job a B26 wouldnt make much difference. Unless its a PTO power issue. I havent dug a basement, but I have dug some very large stumps (24" +) with my B21. Just a little patience required.

Personaly, I'd never choose a B21 over a B26. In operation its not a question which is a superior machine.
We use both B21 and B26 to dig graves with. The B21 is faster as far as getting the hole dug. Both have 36" buckets The B26 may have more digging power, not much though, but the hydraulics aren't as quick. I do like the higher PTO power the B26 has. Both are very nice machines. My favorite will always be the old B20's. They were built "old school tuff" . I never worried about bending a hood or fender on them. My first had well over 3000 hours and it never seen the dealer again after I took it home. I can't say that for the B21's and the first B26.

My Kubota dealer's mechanic once told me the B21 should have been built with the B7800's HST or rear end. Something like that. He said the B21 had a drivetrain weak point that the B7800 did not. Other than that it was a great machine.

I firmly believe the L48 will go down in history as one of the best built machines Kubota will ever build. It has thick steel parts and simple mechanics, where the new models are going to thin metal parts like the hood and lot's of electronics. Tractor owners want heavy built, simple machines. Not fancy "do dads" that break. At least that is the way I think.

I still kick myself everyday for buying my M7040, when I was a breath away from buying the L48. For me it was a huge mistake and one I will most likely have to live with for a very long time.

Interesting. I wonder what the B7800 differences were.

And, 8226hamer, what was better about the B20, vs. the B21?

I'm not using mine other than hog mowing the fields, and my 48 is decked out pretty good with extra buckets, third valve and even a home made cab and heater that works awesome. If I continue the way it has been I may get real serious and get a 50-60-7040 machine with third valve, FEL with SSL and a cab system,..

You could walk up to a B20 and punch it and break your hand. Do it to a B21 and you'll put a dent in it. The B20 was not as intricate with all the linkages in the range shifter. They were more stable on uneven ground. They like everything were just built with better and heavier material than whats being produced today. I got a nice dent in the hood of my new B3030 by dropping a small piece of firewood out of the bucket. I have dropped rip rap on the hoods of the B20 and did no damage.

Don't forget that the B21 still had the 1/8" plate hood...the front part
anyway. The B26, B3030, B7800, etc, all have the standard thin sheet
metal hoods. I have never seen a B20, which was replaced about 1997
by the B21, but there must be thousands of B21s out there. There are at
least 2 of us on TBN who have had broken diff gears, but 2 events do not
make it a common problem. MULESKINNER's dealer may have seen more of
this problem.

As for the top range of the 3 HST ranges on the B21, it does seem to be
fairly useless as the small 1-liter engine does not have the power for high
speed.
