Looking
B series: need advice asap
I'm days away from trading in my bx2370 for a B series and need to choose between the 2601 or the 2650. My biggest question is whether I'll be happy with the power and hydraulics of the 01. I think the 01 is the best fit for my property but 2 friends steered me towards the 2650 based on the backhoe, engine, and hydraulic pump specs on paper. Neither one owns a b series however, so I really need to hear from some 01 and 2650 owners.

My gut says the 01 is a better fit because this tractor will still be my primary finish mower, like the bx the 01 has a suspended deck, and I'm very concerned I won't like the contact deck of the 2650. A smaller tractor in this case works to my advantage. As for implements, I like the idea of more power, but in reality the backhoe work I have lined up is pretty light duty: boxing out a couple turn arounds for stone, digging out a couple small stumps in the yard, then eventually trail work in the woods. The loader will be moving 50 tons of crusher run over the course of this year and next for the turn arounds and freshening up an 800 foot gravel drive, after that the loader work will wind down to occasional chore work here and there. I also plan on matching a brush hog to the tractor, either 4 or 5 foot, for maintaining some pasture and cutting trails.

Standing next to the 2 tractors the 01 seems like it would be a nicer size for mowing and getting in the woods (we have pre existing trails that can get kind of tight). I dont want to go too big and since I have zero backhoe experience I don't know if the bigger hydro pump and better torque of the 2650, and the better specs of the bh77 (swing, reach, cylinders) would be worth it.

Thanks for your input. The last thing I want to do is go against advice, buy the 01 and feel like I'm underpowered. Nor do I want to put added strain on what needs to be a lifetime tractor by going with the smaller hydro pump on the 01. On the flip side, buying too big and regretting it every time I mow or get cornered in the woods would be no fun either.

One other thing that would be helpful for comparison purposes: I've read that the 2650 makes about 15% more torque than the 2601, does anyone know the difference in torque between my BX23 and the engine in the 2601? Only 3 hp difference doesn't seem like a lot more power, but presumably there is a significant increase in torque? I certainly want a noticeable increase in power over my bx, no matter what I buy.

If you're interested, here's my property specs:

- 1.5 acres of yard for weekly finish mowing (higher ground and relatively dry)
- another half to 3/4 acre of grass which is on lower ground and can get quite damp.
- an acre pasture which has started to grow over since we moved in a couple years ago.
- The finish mowing includes 6 or 8 apple trees I dodge around and an enclosed playground, not enough obstacles to slow me down too much but there are a couple tight spots.
- 30 acres of wood, about 1/3 mature with trails, the rest 2nd growth with light brush where I want to add trails.
- I have a plow truck for snow removal, the tractor helps out sometimes but even the bx was fine for what I use it for in the colder months.

Thanks!

I bought a B2650 two weeks ago with FEL and BH. Its my first 4-wheel tractor (I have a BCS walking tractor). I was extremely impressed how maneuverable is is in the woods. I have been using it to move logs and brush and remove stumps. I had the tires loaded and i can't speak to mowing, but I'm very happy to have it. uploadfromtaptalk1461542609093.jpguploadfromtaptalk1461542631239.jpguploadfromtaptalk1461542651271.jpg

I too am in a similar dilemma. I'm selling my BX2660 and looking to go bigger. Again this will be my primary mower and I'm afraid of the weight of the B2650. I never ran out of power with 26hp so I'm looking at B2620, B2601 or the B2650. I do have access to larger tractors so that also is influencing my choice. I will follow both of your threads

I owned a B2410 which is a predecessor to the 2601 (same engine, similar specs, etc). I used that tractor as my weekly mower as well and I was very happy with it. My motivation for a change had to do with the FEL. I was ok with its weight capacity but it didn't go very high and there was no way to convert it to a quick attach system and I wanted a set of forks. The new 2601 improved both of these so it became a choice between the two. In my case, I do not need to mow with my tractor any more so I went with the bigger 2650. It has a much better loader as well as most of the other specs and the cost difference was <$1100.00 which was acceptable to me. I went with R4 industrial tires but if I were to use it on a finished lawn regularly Turf Tires are a must. This tractor is heavy and the industrial tires cause lots of ruts. My small tractor seemed a little more nimble but the 2650 can get in and out of the woods I have pretty well but I don't have nearly as much as you. On either tractor you will likely want to remove the deck when working in the woods however.
Knowing what I know now about both sizes, I would say the 2601 would be a better mower but the 2650 is better at everything else. That being said, I think I would be just as happy today had I opted for the 2601 because it would still do everything I need it to do.

Good luck on your decision.

Have the 2650, it 8s my mower with a 72 inch deck and r4s. Did not get the tires loaded but use plenty of ballast when doing loader work. Only time it messes up the yard is if it's too wet. I mow 1 acre around the house, 1.5 around dad's house and 3 in the field pretty much every week during mowing season. Ben a great tractor, but only had it since last august. 130 and climbing trouble free hours.

I'm in the same boat... Leaning towards a 2601. Everything else just seems too big to get in some of the places I want it to on my 5 acres and I'm leaning towards using it as my primary mower. I too have access to a larger tractor when needed so that plays a factor. I'm going back and forth on the whole is the backhoe worth the extra money debate or not. I am going to be installing a sprinklers system on about 2.5 - 3 acres over the next 2 years, plus putting in some french drains, and laying electric to places. If it were already more landscaped I think I could talk myself into saving the money easier but I think I can justify it with all the projects I have for it. Being able to do a little bit of work here and there whenever I want is a definite plus. Renting something requires dedicating time to make the most of having an extra piece of equipment around, plus having to go get it and bring it back.

One question I wonder about is if a 2601 can handle a smaller / lighter weight grapple. Primary use will be to handle brush, mainly picking up after myself when I get crazy with the chainsaw. I'n not expecting it to pick up a whole dang tree or massive rock. Saving me from having to drag limbs onto a trailer or to a burn pile is what I'm after.

I'm thinking about that grapple question too...will be heading over to the dealer after work to drive both and ask more questions. One of them is how much does the third function option cost? I've seen grapples in the $1500 range but may not be able to spring for it right away.

Yeah I plan on doing the same later on this week. Right now I've just gotten a price for the tractor + loader. Like to add the third function for a third party grapple after purchase but just wanted to get someone to confirm it can do what I expect so I'm not disappointed with it. Then of course pricing for the BH $,$$$....

Still looking at other manufactures comparable models though. Lots of good nice tractors out there.

When I was getting my quotes last fall, the third function option was $799.00 for either model. I thought that was high so I think I will install a diverter instead. From what I've seen, those can be had for half as much as the third function.
I have seen lighter weight grapples on both of these model, so I wouldn't hesitate to get one. Make sure you get the SSQA and you'll be able to find a grapple to match pretty easily.

There are quite a few models that are close to the 2601 but the 2650 seems to be in a class by itself. It is pysically larger than the JD, Mahindra, and LS that I looked at. Those models were a direct comparison to the 2601 but the Mahindra and LS at least had better loader specs. I chose Kubota mostly because of my past experience but I also liked that the 2650 was a little bigger without going into the next class size.

Good luck.
