Hmmm ... based on those who are contributing to this thread, let me pose this question.

What situtation would warrant the B2710 over the 2910 or the 3010?

What factors would be present that some or all of you would properly decide that the 2710 was the machine for you.

Its difficult to be objective, isn't it! :)

Doug,
The only advantage to the 2710 is price or maybe availability on a dealer's lot. I would drive all three, see what the smallest space you need to routinely move the tractor through is and buy the largest one that fits. The bigger tractors are heavier and probably more comfortable, they can lever more rocks out of the ground, carry more manure, rocks, gravel etc. If I had bought a 2910 I would have ended up trading up to an L series anyway because of my needs. Your needs, comforts, preferences may vary.

I was debating the same issue just a couple of months ago. After test driving all three, there was no comparison for me - the L3010 hands down. I think you get a lot more power for the small increase in price. Plus, I think the L3010 is still manueverable enough to do most things. Good luck.

Let me rephrase this ...

All of you who are 2710 owners, why did you choose this model over the larger tractors? I know for some of you, the 2910 wasn't offered yet ... but ... anyway ... would like to know.

I'm leaning towards the 2710 because of price/availability.

Do implements cost the same between high end B series and low end L series?

2910s seem nowhere to be found. Yuz guys have em all, don cha!

I have a 2910 and picked it for the added features. I only would have taken a 2710 if the cash difference was a critical make/break issue for me.

I haven't heard any reason why you cannot use a 3010. If that's true then I'd still point you that way.

Doug, as I've said, the B2910 didn't exist when I got my B2710. And there are two reasons for me to go with the B series instead of the L series: (1) most important reason - cost, and (2) I didn't want a fold down ROPS because I wanted a good canopy, and nothing any taller than the B series ROPS would go through the door into my shop. I also wanted to be able to get under some trees and didn't want something that would be too big in my vegetable garden, etc. However, if it were wide open spaces and I had the money, I'd go for the M120./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

These are good examples of things that place a hard limit on how big a tractor you can get, and given my completely unproven theory of tractor selection, should drive your choice.

It's great telling other people how to spend their money, isn't it. Next time I buy we'll see if I adhere to my own rules.

Just go with this "The John Deere 4300, also our 25-35 Horsepower Best of Class Winner, brings a similar theme to the table for the Tractor of the Year Award, and once again we find it to be simply the best."

I have the 2710, and the 2910 WAS available when I was looking. You already nailed the reason I didn't get the 2910 - the features didn't justify the price differential. Of course, after several months of price comparisons (just to be sure I got a good deal), I'm certain that I got a very good price on the 2710. The dealer was probably trying to move some, and didn't have any 2910s, because there was about a $2000 difference in price. The price quoted for the 2910 was on the high side of the acceptable range. I never use the cruise control, I rarely stall from lack of power (when I do, I doubt that 2 extra horses would have prevented the stall anyway), the seat/steering wheel fit fine as they are. The telescoping links would be really handy, but they sure aren't worth $2000.

With all of that said, I was originally looking at the 1700/2400 size, and I do mow. I followed the advice of everyone here - I went up to the largest size I thought would work for me. The L series was just too much for manuevering around my yard and between my X-mas tree rows.

As for Boondox comments on granite - The 27/29 may not be able to lift a full bucket of granite, but I've never had any trouble lifting and controlling a full bucket of rocks from 4" - 20" in size. I'm no geologist, but I think these are your basic igneous field rocks - not as dense as granite - but no lightweights either. You can do everything you described doing with a 2710 and not ever feel like you "settled". If you are going to dig out 800 - 1500 pound boulders, you will find the 27/29 a little lacking. I daresay, if that is all you are doing, you would find even a 3010 lacking. I have 10 acres - half xmas trees, 1/3 forest, remaining lawn, 800 ft gravel driveway, mostly level land with some mild grades. Its all I need.

That's a very good point.
